The Lady Cardinals come into Austin with an 8-3 record but are 0-2 on the road. They have lost to Big 12 teams, Texas Tech (50-59) and Baylor (83-36). Lamar has been picked to finish 3rd in the Southland Conference West Division by both coaches and sports information directors (SIDs) in 2008-09 preseason polls. Lady Cardinals Brittney Williams (#34, 5-10 Jr. F) and Nikki Williams (#10, 5-5 Sr. G) were named to the SLC preseason first team.

N. Williams (13.8 ppg), B. Williams (10.5 ppg) and Darika Hill (#33, 6-0 Jr. F, 10.2 ppg) lead Lamar in scoring. N. Williams, B. Williams, Hill, Emily Spickler (#4, 5-9 Sr. G, and Agnija Reke (#14, 5-9 Sr. G) have started all 11 games for the Lady Cardinals. Ang Green (#24, 5-8 Fr. G) and Trashanna Smith (#25, 5-11 Soph. F) are the top reserves, having averaged double digit minutes in all 11 games. Chrisan Petrovanie (#45, 6-4 Fr. C) and Brittany Hendrix (#15, 5-8 Fr. G) have also seen action in all the games. N. Williams and Reke are the top ball thieves for Lamar with 26 and 25 steals, respectively. Smith, off the bench, is the top shot blocker with 18 for the season. Hill, with 10 blocks, is the only other Lady Cardinal with more than 3 blocks. Reke (4.5 apg) and N. Williams (3.6 apg) are the top distributors for Lamar. Smith leads the team with 8.0 rpg while Hill (6.5 rpg), B. Williams (6.0 rpg) and N. Williams (4.3 rpg) provide support on the boards.

Opponents are having trouble scoring against the Lady Cardinals. They are holding opponents to 35.7% from the field and 29.5 from BTA. Of course, Lamar is not exactly lighting it. They are hitting 39.2% of their FGs and 32.3% of their 3s. Spickler (25-49, 51.0%) is the top 3pt threat for the Lady Cardinals. N. Williams has taken the most 3s and hits a decent percentage (22-58, 37.9%). Hill also shoots a lot of 3s (9-39) but has not been effective to date hitting only 23.1% . As expected, the leading scorers, N. Williams, B. Williams and Hill have taken the most shots. N. Williams has hit 52-130 (40.0%), B. Williams 46-112 (41.1%), and Hill 46-110 (41.8%). The most effective shooters are Spickler (28-59, 47.5%) and Smith (23-51, 45.1%). Those two are the only ones on the team making over 45% of their FG attempts. The Lady Cardinals are average from the FT line at 67.7%. The most likely to reach the FT line are Green (29-43, 67.4%), N. Williams (26-32, 81.3%), B. Williams (21-31, 67.7%), and Smith (19-31, 61.3%).

Brit (14.8 ppg) and Kat (14.1 ppg) lead the Horns in scoring. Erika is at 9.3 ppg while four others average at least 7 ppg. Brit (122), Kat (105), and Erika (109) have attempted at least 105 shots. Six others have attempted between 77 and 45 FGs. Kat and Brit are very effective with their shots, making 49.5% and 50% respectively. Six other Horns are shooting at least 45% from the field. Erika (19-53, 35.8%) and Kat (17-48, 35.4%) are the top 3pt threats for the Horns. Brit (48%), Earnie (50%) and Carla (46%) can hit from BTA but don’t shoot as often as Erika and Kat. Brit and Kat have gone to the FT line 53 times with Brit making 44 (83%) and Kat 48 (90.6%). Carla (29 FTAs, 82.8%) and Yvonne (28 FTAs, 71.4%) have gone to the FT line the most of the remaining players. Kristen at 94.1% (16-17) has the best FT percentage on the team.

Kat leads the team with 6.2 rpg. Earnie (5.4 rpg), Lindsey (5.2 rpg) and Kristen (4.1 rpg) provide support on the boards. Carla has 67 assists while Yvonne’s 26 assists rank second on the team. Five others have between 12 and 20 assists on the season. All Horn players have gotten at least four assists. The Ashleys provide a pretty tough fence to shoot over, with Lindsey getting 33 blocks and Gayle 28. The two have taken turns being the top shotblocker in games. Every Horn has at least 3 steals with seven having between 11 and 19 steals.

The Lady Cardinals are losing the rebound battle by 3, 38.2 to 41.2. This is in part due to the small starting five Lamar puts on the floor (5-5, 5-9, 5-9, 5-10 and 6-0). Petrovanie is one of three Lady Cardinals at least 6-0 and the only one over 6-1. The Horns should dominate the boards. Lamar is taking four more 3s a game than the Horns. The 3 is a big part of their game as about 1 of every 3 shot attempt is a three. Normally, the Horns are stellar in guarding the 3. They will be have to be very much aware of the Lady Cardinal outside shooters.

Like the Lady Cardinals, the Horns depend on their guards and wings to score. But while the Horns have several players that can hit the 3, penetration is key for the Horns. That leads to open looks, layups and FTs. That accounts in large measure for their assisting on 56% of made FGs and a FG% of 47.5. That ball movement, ball sharing, and ability to get to the FT line was missing in the game against San Diego State. It will need to reappear for the Horns to get a win. It is unlikely that Lamar will be successful going inside, not with their lack of height and with Lindsey and Gayle waiting. Perimeter shooting will be big for them. The Horns will have to deny open looks for the Lady Cardinal guards and wings.

While they average 343 at home, the Lady Cardinals have played in front of hostile crowds before in games at Baylor (5536) and Texas Tech (8303). The crowd they will face in Austin should not be anything new. And with students out on break and the new year just starting, our crowd may not be as big as usual.

Texassports.com has their preview up. Lamar still does not a preview up.

i completely forgot Jenna Plumley transferred from OU to Lamar after her shoplifting incident and suspension. didn't actually see her on the bench, just on the program roster (i guess she probably doesn't travel since she is sitting out the year).

nice win for the horns! still sloppy with the passing. but the defense stepped up big in the 2nd half. and i was so happy to see Erika lighting it up again. 3 3-pointers in the span of maybe 2 minutes...i love it!!!

What I noticed the most was the difficulty in passing into the post, either short or, most often, too high. Errors by both Gs and Ps in trying to make that pass inside. That will be improved as the season continues.

At my end of the court, Erika whipped a pass to Kristen from about five feet that was a rocket. It bounced off Kristen and right to Carla who hit the short jumper. Wonder if Kristen got an assist on that play?

The team played much better, especially in the second half. They bounced Lamar just as they should have. The Purdue game will help to see if the Horns will continue to click on all cylinders. I haven't checked the box score but, IIRC, the Horns had four players in double digits and a bunch more with 8-4 pts. Seemed like the Nash sisters were cleaning up the glass when they were in there. And it was fun to see Erika hit those 3s!!

I just didn't think the team looked like they were clicking on all cylinders. They shot well, but like Babhorn, I am concerned about getting the ball into the post - especially against better teams, e.g. Purdue, and our B12 opponents. Also, we made some silly silly turnovers - that has got to STOP! For some reason it felt like they were playing better prior to Christmas. IDK - maybe I'm hallucinating

I did like the 19 assists - would rather not have 17 turnovers, but more assists that turnovers is nice!
