Lake Tahoe

We've only been there in August:

South Lake Tahoe/Stateline area - nicest hotel/casino is Harvey's - it's close to Caesars and a couple others.

North end of the lake - nicest hotel is the Hyatt.

Take the Heavenly ski lift to have a sandwich at the cafe - the view is awesome.

Take the paddlewheel "steamer" cruise (either the Tahoe Queen or the Dixie).

If you have a rent car, drive over to Virginia City - although kind of "touristy", it's a fascinating place. The "Ponderosa Ranch" thing was a total tourist trap.

Over in Reno, the National Car Museum is worth a visit if you like cars.

Drink & gamble.

Play golf.

Take a sweater or light jacket, especially on the boat cruise - it was in the low 50s when we went across the lake into the breeze.

thanks for the info. I'll look some of this up. We haven't picked a place that has been our biggest question because there are so many to choose from.

We always stay at Harvey's. Nice sports book, and the Hard Rock Cafe is good for an easy dinner.

Summer - the Tahoe Rim Trail is completed now, so you can hike all the way around it now. Or just smaller sections if you're a weenie.

The scenery is beautiful from up high.

Winter - rent snowshoes and go to Camp Richardson and stroll through the forest, then down along the lakeside. Go up to where they had the Winter Olympics (I always forget the name - NW side of the lake*). Lots of activity there - dog sledding is fun, carriage rides, drinking....

Both - spend some time just browsing through the shops in S Lake Tahoe (CA side across from Stateline NV). The new Marriott resort has some nice shops and restaurants. The tram up to Heavenly is worth it summer or winter.

*edit - duh, Squaw Valley, just saw it in Rolling's post above.

I see on the news that hundreds of South Lake Tahoe homes burned down in a large forest fire yesterday.

stayed at Harvey's with the wife in March. Nice place, would definitely recommend.

Caesar's is now called MontBleu and underwent some renovations. It's "swankier" on the inside but I have not seen the rooms. Have heard good and bad reviews.

Yeah, the dogsledding up at Squaw is a kick. They take you out across a golf course. The dogs are really powerful, too - as soon as the 'driver' takes the break off, it's quite an acceleration. And those dogs love to run.

We've also done snowmobiling. We started at Zephyr Cove (where the paddleboat is). They get you suited up there, then bus you up to the pass. It's about a 1-2 hour guided tour up there with some great views, and some hot chocolate halfway through. It's worth doing once or twice.

Emmm...the whole valley is pretty full of smoke right now. Might want to check on that before you book...
