Lake Austin Low

I was down in Austin this past weekend and driving around and saw that Lake Austin is VERY low. My understanding was that normally Lake Austin is a constant level lake. Does anyone know why it is so low right now?

Thanks for the info. Makes sense and I was sure there was a good reason, I just didn't know it.

Lake Austin wouldn't be useable in the summer because of the Hydrillla if they didn't do this in the winter.

Yeah, they do it every other year at least, and lately it's been pretty much every year.

But, as has been pointed out, if we don't get a freeze while it's down, it won't help much for the duckweed or hydrilla.

Still, it's a chance to perform maintenance on docks and shorelines.

There's plenty of other drunken idiots in runabouts that can't drive either, not just wakeboats.

Plenty of drunks in runabouts, wakeboats, and fishing boats too. And that's not even counting all the folks who are stoned...

Be careful and stay safe out there.

This was always an opportunity for big 4WDs to show their stuff when I was in HS. Do we still have guys challenging the Lake Austin Mucky Mud?

Lake Travis pwns Lake Austin....

Warmer, cleaner water and none of that crap growing under the surface. Much more room too.
I have lived here for 53 years and I have not been on Lake Austin (as far as boating or swimming) in 35 years....because it blows.

LA is ******* ALLSOME, especially if you are a wakeboarder/skier. For 75% of the week, about 80% of the water is butter and if there isn't smooth water on your stretch, there's some right around the bend. And it's drought proof.

LT is great for hanging out on the lake, not so much for watersports. Plus, I live 100 yards from LA, so that works real well for me.

I lost my car keys about 50' from the boat landing down there near the dam in 1959. When they lowered the water level a couple of months later I slogged around in the mud to no avail to find them.
