Labor rates for replacing the starter

Bad news. yet another problem with my wife's vehicle. turns over just fine, just won't start. lights, radio, etc come on as normal, just won't turn over. doubt it's the alternator as it seems to carry a charge. in any event, it's stranded at the grocery store and i'm thinking it's the starter. i know the part itself is somewhere between $100 to $150, but labor is outrageous. any recs?

if it "turns over just fine" it most definately isn't the starter.

Elsewhere you say it doesn't turn over.

the turn over part is the only thing that the starter does.

does it go rur rur rur when you turn the key or not?

Actually had it done yesterday at NTB.... Labor was 9/10 hour, $79.20.

Could be the fuel pump. That happened to me on my 92 Rover and the pump is inside the gas tank. Had it towed and they dropped the tank and replaced the fuel pump. It was about $500 including the tow.

I assume you're in Austin but I use the Rover Shoppe in Houston.

If it is the starter my basic rates are

12 pack - domestic cars
case - foreign cars

The price of the beer must reflect the price of the car.

fuel pump or ignition module would be my guess.

The description sounds like the car is "cranking" over just fine, so the starter is working, and power is reaching the starter from the ignition switch. So the engine cranks, but won't fire up. There is either no gas, no spark or is out of time.
It has no gas if you are out of gas, fuel pump bad or fuel pump relay, could be wiring or computer.
It has no spark if ignitor, coil, wiring or computer bad.
Out of time if timing belt or chain broken or jumped.
Or your wife let her brother work on it in your driveway without telling you. That could be the problem.

considering i was leaving for out of town and my wife needed a car, i broke down and took it in to the dealership just so i could get the loaner. good news is that i got a free tow. the bad has yet to come. diagnostic comes back thursday morning. my bet is fuel related...
