La Opinion endorses Obama

The drivers license issue is an interesting aspect of the illegal immigration debate. If I understand correctly, the courts have held that immigration is a federal issue and not a state issue. As the federal government has, to date, not passed federal legislation to address the reality of 12 million illegal aliens, it by default, leaves it to the states to deal with the day to day reality of 12 million people. Certainly there are laws making it illegal to come into the country without following legal procedures or to overstay a visa or work permit, the enforcement of these laws are obviously not working. Hence 12 million people.

My question is what is the best way to deal with 12 million illegal aliens until such time that the federal government resolves the issue? How does the state deal with the day to day reality?

Children born in the United States are U.S. citizens even if their parents are not. As U.S. citizens are they not entitled to an education? If so how do they physically get to school? Do we set up a system of buses to deliver them to school? If that is impractical, do we want their illegal parents to drive them to school without drivers licenses? Without drivers licenses they cannot get auto insurance. Without insurance they probably cannot pay for property damage and bodily injury for at-fault accidents. That leaves legal residents without practical legal recourse and unless they buy expensive uninsured motorist coverage they are economically harmed. In some cases severely.

It appears to me anyway, that it would be in the economic interest of legal residents to allow the state to license these drivers and require auto liability insurance. I'm not proposing amnesty for illegal immigration. I am only proposing a much less expensive means to deal with day to day reality.

I am certainly open to other solutions that are workable and economically feasible until the federal government does its job.
