LA best team of the decade?

Sure we have not finished the series but after last night I think it is pretty certain that LA wins this series and gets their 4th title this decade.

I am sure there will be debate so that is why I posed it as a question.

LA on track to win 4th title in the last 10 seasons.....From 1999/2000 to 2008/2009 seasons. They have been to the finals and finished runner-up 2 other times. Thus they have been to the finals a total of 6 times the last 10 seasons, winning 4 NBA titles.

Their 2 losses came to Detroit in 2003/2004 and Boston in 2007/2008. Those 2 teams were arguably the 2 best defensive teams this decade and played very solid unselfish team-basketball. 2 very good teams to have lost to. In 2003 they lost to SA in the conference semifinals...SA went on to win the championship that year.

The LA team at the early part of the decade featured 2 HOFers in Shaq and Kobe and 2 other guys perhaps worthy of the HOF in Fisher and Horry. They had a deep bench and a HOF coach. Their 3 titles and 4 appearances in the finals is nearly enough to give them the best team of the decade title....except that SA has 3 titles (4 if you go back to shortened 98 season) during this time as well. However SA's 3 final appearance is only half of LA's 6 finals appearances during this time frame.

The LA team the 2nd half of the decade has featured only 1 sure-fire future HOFer in Kobe. Fisher and Kobe are the only 2 players to have been on all 6 LA finals teams during this decade. Jackson the HOF coach has been their the entire time as well. But other than that this current LA team does not appear to feature any future HOFers. They have only been to 2 finals appearances so far compared to the previous versions 4. Right now they are not as good as their earlier LA team but that is really a different discussion. However their accomplishment of going to 2 straight finals and likely winning 1 is pretty good considering their lack of overall star talent. If they can win 1 or 2 more in coming years then they will cement their own legacy as a great team.

When we look back at this decade I think we will look back similarly to what we thought about the 80's team of LA and Boston. LA won 5 titles and was far and away the best team of the 1980s. However Boston was a great rival and finished the decade with 3 titles. LA was the best team of the 1980s and Boston was #2. The difference then was that these 2 great teams met each other in the finals and the dual was a more elevated stage.

When this decade is looked back on people will see LAs 4 titles and 6 finals appearances compared to SA's 3 titles and 3 finals appearances. SA will only have been LA once during that stretch in the 03 conf semis. I think you would have to say that LA is the #1 team of the decade and SA is the #2 team of this decade. Unfortunately we haven't seen as many great face offs between these 2 teams as we did with LA/Boston and of course they never were able to face off on the biggest of stages.

Thoughts?

They are easily the best team of the decade.

I dont see how this is debatable.

They've been to the finals 6 times and are about to win 4. Their closest competition would be the Spurs and they knocked them out of the playoffs 4 different times.

2001, 2002, 2004 and 2008

Here who has won the Western Conference this decade

Los Angeles (6) 2000, 2001, 2002, 2004, 2008, 2009
San Antonio (3) 2003, 2005, 2007
Dallas (1) 2006

I'm not going to debate this, just point out that the Spurs won in 1999, 2003, 2005, and 2007. And I realize going back to 1999 is not in this decade. 4 championships in 9 years must mean something.

Well we only have 9 years to use. So if you using decade as a period of 10 years instead of just the 2000s... 1999 would count.

Lakes in a trot, even if we go back and include the '99 Spurs. Lakes have made it to more finals.

By the by, the first of the 3-peat teams had Glen Rice, who, while not a definite HoF player, he shot like a ************.

Ron Harper was cagey and made big plays for the Laker teams he played on, especially defensively.

Fox rose up late in the Western Conference game 7 and OT versus Sacramento. He did his job.

DFish, bless his heart, is not a HoFer.

4 in 9 is not a dynasty, but it is impressive and a demo of how good the Spurs have been as a collection of players and coaches and administrators. All respect for the Spurs organization. Their fans can hang.

Go Lakes (if it can't be the Cavs, go Lakes).

Lakes no doubt.

Don't tread on B Shaw...He was a very solid role player.
Harp ran the triangle like clockwork for Phil.

From the comments in this thread it doesn't really seem like much of an argument. Thus looking back we will say the best teams of the past 3 decades were as follows:

80s - LA
90s - Chicago
00s - LA

Best team in 2 out of last 3 decades is pretty amazing for a franchise.

Also from comments in this thread I think it is even more evident that the LA 3 peat team has assembled a ton of talent that far outweighs what LA currently has. What Kobe and this LA team is doing is pretty impressive. And you gotta think they will make a run next year too.

SA had a great run from 03-07. Just not great enough for the entire decade.

Well it is official. LA wins 4th title of the decade.

Looks like a team that will be back next year. Pretty cool to see Phil with that X hat on.

Memphis what were you thinkin?. Let's give the best team another option at center and not get anything in return. Must have taken lessons from Minnesota Vikes.

The Minnesota Vikings got a lot more in return than Memphis did though. Herschel at least was a star running back. Memphis essentially gave Gasol to the Lakers away for free.

Team of the 2000s - Definitely the Lakers. Spurs are a clear second but there's no contest for first. Third?

Team of 1999 through 2009: Debateable. It depends on which matters more: that the Lakers made the Finals two additional times, or that they also missed the playoffs altogether twice. It also depends on ones opinion of factors such as the LA-biased 2002 Game 6 officiating crew screwing over the Kings, the Lakers twice winning titles when the defending champs lost their best player for the playoffs, or the Lakers winning twice as many playoff series against SA as the Spurs have won against LA.

Right now in this decade the Lakers teams of the early part of it would have had the best team when Shaq and Kobe were playing well together. Also since they won four I would say they will probably be the team of the decades. But I don't think this year's LA championship could have beat the Spurs Champions especailly the 2005 team when Manu, Tony and Tim were going great with a great supporting cast.

Ranking the championship teams of the decade individually is another issue entirely. I do agree that this LA team right is not at the top of that list. However, where would you ranked 08 Boston, or 04 Detroit?

Regarding the separate championship teams, here's the team, their record, their playoff record in parentheses and their average score.

2000 LAL 67-15 (15-8) 100.8-92.3
2001 LAL 56-26 (15-1) 100.6-97.2
2002 LAL 58-24 (15-4) 101.3-94.1
2003 SAS 60-22 (16-8) 95.8-90.4
2004 DET 54-28 (16-7) 90.1-84.3
2005 SAS 59-23 (16-7) 96.2-88.4
2006 MIA 52-30 (16-7) 99.9-90.0
2007 SAS 58-24 (16-4) 98.5-90.1
2008 BOS 66-16 (16-10) 100.5-90.3
2009 LAL 65-17 (16-7) 106.9-99.3
