Kansas State (12-7, 3-4) and riding a two game winning streak, comes to Austin to face Texas (7-11, 0-7) on Saturday. The Wildcats will look to even the series at 12 apiece with their third straight win over the Horns. Texas will attempt to break two losing streaks on Saturday—a 7 game conference losing streak and a two game losing streak against KSU.

The KSU Wildcats have the number 3 scorer in league games in Brittany Chambers (# 2, 5-8 Sr. G) who is averaging 19.0 ppg. Haley Texada (# 1, 5-7 Soph. G) joins her in double figure scoring at 12.9 ppg. Texada is one of three Texans on the KSU roster and the only one not out due to injuries. Brianna Craig (# 20, 5-10 Fr. G) adds 9.1 ppg for the Wildcats. With only seven players available, Chambers (42-108, 38.9%), Texada (29-81, 35.8%) and Craig (22-76, 28.9%) are taking the majority of the shots. Heidi Brown (# 10, 5-11 Soph. G; 5-8 FGs, 62.5%) and Mariah White (# 22, 2-7 Sr. G; 14-28 FGs, 50.0%) have better shooting percentages but take far fewer shots. Being a short team, KSU relies significantly on the three pointer. Chambers (20-62, 32.3%), Texada (13-46, 28.3%) and Craig (15-53, 28.3%) are the main shooters from BTA for KSU. White (5-10, 50.0%) and Brown (4-6, 66.7%) take few shots from BTA but are effective when they launch. Chantay Caron (# 11, 5-11 Jr. G/F) suffered a bruised SI joint (just above the tailbone)and could be out for this game. She is their best FT shooter although she has only taken 8 attempts (7-8, 87.5%). Chambers (29-38, 76.3%) and Texada (19-24, 79.2%) are the most effective in getting to the FT line for KSU.

Chambers is the leading rebounder (6.3 rpg) with Caron and White adding 4.7 rpg each. Texada and Craig average 3.9 rpg apiece. White has 25 total assists while Chambers has 22 and Texada 14. The team is not a big shot blocking team as they only have 8 blocks in 7 games. Ashia Woods, out for the season, has half of them. White (20 steals) and Caron (12) top the team in that category.

While KSU has 13 players on their roster, four are out for the season with injuries and one has left the team, leaving eight. But two are out with injuries but still possible to return this season. KSU effectively has six players: Chambers, Texada, Craig, Brown, White and Kendra Spresser (# 13, 5-5 RS Jr. G who transferred from Seward County CC). When Caron returns, that will give them seven players. The injury Caron suffered in KSU’s last game could keep out of Saturday’s game against Texas. An anesthetic injection block could help with the pain.

Four players are averaging 30 or more minutes a game. Chambers is actually averaging more than 40 mpg at 40.3 mpg which tops the Big 12. White (35.3 mpg), Craig (34.3 mpg) and Texada (30.0 mpg) all play huge minutes for KSU. They may have to replace the 26.4 mpg that Caron normally plays. Brown (9.7 mpg) is likely the one to get most of those minutes. Spresser averages 7 mpg. Chambers, Texada, Craig, White & Caron were the starters against OSU but Brown may start if Caron is unable to go.

Horns are led in scoring by Chassidy (13.6 ppg) and Nneka (11.7 ppg). Four other players average between 7 and 9 ppg: Imani (8.9 ppg), Taylor (8.0 ppg in her first Big 12 game), Empress (7.3 ppg) and Ashley (7.0 ppg). Even though she has missed two league games, Chassidy is second in FGs made (26) and first in FGs attempted (76). Imani is first in FGs made (27) and second in FGs attempted (65). Chassidy is second in 3pters made (9) and first in 3pters attempted (35). Brady is the top FT shooter at 88.9% (8-9) while Nneka has the most makes and attempts (18-27, 66.7%). Imani (8-13, 61.5%), Empress (7-14, 50.0%) and Chassidy (7-10, 70.0%) join Nneka as the only Horns that have attempted at least 10 FTs.

Imani ranks first on the team with an average of 8.1 rpg. Kayla played in her first league game and grabbed 8 rebs to rank second based on average. Nneka (6.7 rpg) and Chassidy (6.2 rpg) are third and fourth, respectively. Empress (20) and Celina (15) are 1 and 2 in assists. Ashley is third with eight assists. Imani is first with 13 blocks while Chassidy is second on the team with five blocks. Celina and Chassidy are tied for first with 10 steals while Ashley and Brady each have eight. The Horns will have 12 players available for action although Anne Marie and Ashley did not play against Kansas due to injury and may not be available. Eight of those 12 have started at least one game. Imani and Empress have started all seven league games. Nneka (6-6) and Chassidy (5-5) have started in all games they were available for. Chassidy (34.4 mpg), Empress (33.3 mpg) and Nneka (31.8 mpg) are averaging over 30 mpg. Ashley (26.5 mpg), Imani (24.7 mpg) and Celina (21.6 mpg) are at 20 plus mpg. Kayla played 20 minutes in her first action against Kansas. Nadia, Gigi, Sara and Brady are all averaging at least 12 mpg. With Chassidy and Nneka serving a one game suspension and Ashley & Anne Marie out with injuries, Imani, Empress, Gigi, Sara and Celina started the Kansas game with Brady, Nadia and Kayla coming off the bench.

Projected starters based on the last game:
[pre]
Texas KSU

Hattis (6-4 Jr. F) Brown (5-11 Soph. G)F
Imani (6-7 Fr. C) Texada (5-7 Soph. G)
Empress (5-7 Fr. G) Chambers (5-8 Sr. G)
GiGi (6-2 Jr. F) White (5-7 Sr. G)
Celina (5-8 Fr. G) Craig (5-10 Fr. G) [/pre]

While it is possible that Chassidy and Nneka will resume their regular starting spots, it is also possible that they will come off the bench. Texas will at almost full strength with only Ashley and Anne Marie question marks as to their availability. Even without those two, Texas will have an advantage with ten players available to KSU’s six or seven. The Wildcats will look to stay out of foul trouble, especially Chambers, who is their main player. Unless Stacey Malone (# 25, 6-1 Fr. F) is released to play in this game, KSU will have no one taller than Brown at 5-11. Texas is going to seek to dominate inside. The Texas posts will need to be able to pass to the open perimeter player if KSU collapses inside. For Texas, they will need to ratchet up their 3pt defense as that is the shot that KSU favors due to their lack of height inside. KSU is first in the league in 3s made per game (9.4) and in total 3s made (66). Against OSU, 41 of the 65 shots that KSU took were 3s. 16 of their 23 FGs were 3s. They were outrebounded by 14 but had 16 steals while only allowing OSU two. The Horns, last in the Big 12 in TOs (152) and in TO average (21.7), will need to cut back on those.

Neither team has been very good at stopping opponents from scoring as they rank 10th (Texas) and 8th (KSU) in scoring defense. They flip flop those positions in 3pt FG% defense. This could turn into a high scoring game. If it comes to FTs, though, KSU has a definite advantage as they are first in the league in making FTs. Texas, on the other hand, puts opponents on the FT line over 20 times per game, a situation that could help KSU pull off a win. Where Texas could win this game is on the offensive boards as the Horns lead the league in offensive rebounds. Converting those second chances will help them gain their first league win. KSU has the advantage in momentum as they are on a two game winning streak and are coming off an upset of #12/11 ranked Oklahoma State while Texas is seeking to snap a seven game league losing streak.

KSU is short, in height and in their bench.

They will bring the intensity. They aren't scared of anyone and will battle the whole way. Brittany Chambers is as tough as anyone in the B12. And she's probably as good a scorer as Fussell, driving or shooting long 3s.

Their defensive stats probably don't look good because of their height disadvantage. But they play the same furious defense they've been playing for a while.

They will not back down. But if Texas can match their intensity, you can out-athlete them.

Finally!

We're gonna win this one. Been waiting for Imani to get that last rb for the dbl-dbl for the longest time, and with just over a min left she grabbed it. We were shooting 87% from the FT line but those last two misses dropped us to 70%. Double-double for both Nneka and Imani, and true to form Chas reached dbl figures as well; she also pulled down 7 rbs and had 3 assists. Way to go, Chas! Feels good to win, it's been a while!! TCU up next, time to start a streak heading back in the other direction.

In one sense we got lucky that KSU missed a lot of makeable threes, but for the most part, they were taking 3s because it was their only option rather than because they wanted them; we just weren't letting them have much of anything else.

Wow, maybe we can get 10 wins this season...

Looks like Nneka and Imani had great games. So glad Imani decided to stick with her commitment to Texas. Think she's going to be special before all is said and done. Nneka really has improved dramatically from her freshman season. And less than 20 turnovers in the game! Is that the first time under 20 this season? Huge positives for the Horns in rebounding and points in the paint.

Way to go Horns! Take it to the Horned Frogs next Saturday!
