KSU and Texas meet in Manhattan Wednesday night. They are tied in conference play at 8-6 and for fifth play in the league. While there is a slim change that the winner will catch ISU for fourth if ISU stumbles, it’s unlikely. What they are playing for is for fifth in the league. Texas needs this win to guarantee at least a tie with KSU and therefore the fifth spot in conference due to the head to head win. A loss to KSU pretty much means finishing sixth in the conference regardless of the outcome of the OU game this weekend. Both are coming off home losses. KSU is on a two game losing streak and Texas has lost their last game. KSU is 6-1 in conference home games, having lost that one to A&M Sunday 71-45. Texas is 4-3 in Big 12 road games, going 2-1 in their last three road games. The Horns beat ISU, lost to A&M and beat Missouri. Next up for KSU is a road game at Colorado while Texas finishes up Big 12 play by hosting OU on Sunday.

Shalee Lehning (# 5, 5-9 Sr. G) makes KSU go. Unfortunately for KSU, she is just coming back from a bout with mono and in the game Sunday against Baylor did not appear to yet be at full strength. She is third on the team in scoring at 10.2 ppg. Ashley Sweat (# 4, 6-2 Jr. F) tops KSU in scoring at 17.4 ppg. Marlies Gipson (# 51, 6-0 Sr. F) is second at 10.4 ppg. Sweat (12.6 FGA per game), Gipson (11.1 FGA per game), Lehning (8.3 FGA per game) and Kari Kincaid (# 41, 5-10 Jr. G, 7.1 FGA per game) are the players most likely to put up a shot for KSU. Sweat’s 46.6 FG % tops that quartet. Kincaid’s 55 3pt attempts lead the team. She has made 15 for 27.3%. She leads five other players that have launched at least 20 3pters in league play. Kelsey Nelson’s 40.7% on 11-27 3s is tops percentagewise. Sweat’s 72-86 FTs (83.7%) tops the team in FTs made, attempted and in FT%. Next closest is Lehning’s 28-40 FTs. Only two players have a better percentage but those two are 6-6 and 2-2. Lehning (7.0 rpg), Gipson (6.4 rpg) and Sweat (5.4 rpg) are the top rebounders for KSU. Even after missing three games due to mono, Lehning’s 63 assists (5.7 apg) lead the team as Gipson has 35 assists for second. Gipson has 30 blocks with no other player having more than 6 (Sweat). Aside from those two, two blocks is the most any other KSU player has in league play. Lehning (17 steals), Sweat (16 steals) and Gipson (14 steals) are the only KSU players with double digit steals.

As a team, KSU plays a deliberate style, slowing the game down. They shoot only 41% from the field and 28.5% from BTA. Their defense is their main strength. as they hold opponents to 39.2% on FGs and 24.2% from BTA. The 39.2% from behind the arc is deceiving as they only permit 2.8 3s per game on average. They are a very good FT shooting team, hitting 72.5% of FTs. A weakness is how little they get to the line—only 14.8 times a game. They are a small team, with only two players at 6-0 and five at 6-2. That is a bit deceiving as three of those five are freshmen and only one plays at least 10 minutes. Sweat averages 35.3 minutes and Danielle Zanotti (# 25, 6-2 Sr. G/F) averages 23 minutes a game. Sweat, Gipson, Lehning, and Kincaid all average over 31 minutes a game with Sweat, Lehning, and Kincaid all playing more than 34 minutes a game. This is a team of iron women, one reason presumably they play a slow down game. Lehning played 29 minutes against A&M after playing 14 in her first game back. I would expect her to play as many as needed, around her average of 34-35 minutes. How effective she will be remains to be seen, especially at the end if this game is a close one.

Texas is led by Brit at 12.4 ppg. She is the only Horn scoring in double digits in league play. Kat is averaging 9.9 ppg and Ashleigh 8.7 ppg. The Horns have five players that have taken at least 20 3s in league play. Kat leads in makes and attempts (20-57, 35.1%). Ashleigh is the best sharpshooter from BTA at 10-22, 45.5%). Nine of the 11 Horns have gone to the FT line at least 10 times. Kat leads in FT% at 84.1% (17-44). Brit has the most makes and attempts (42-56, 75.0%). Unfortunately for the Horns, six of those nine Horns are making between 67 and 44%. Kat leads the team in rebounding at 6.5rpg, although she has been coming off the bench the last few games. Lindsey with 4.6 rpg and Earnie with 4.3 rpg are the only other Horns averaging at least 4 rpg. Three others are averaging 3.6 rpg. Carla has 63 assists (4.5 apg) with Ashleigh’s 23 second on the team. Lindsey slowly keeps expanding her lead in blocks. She now has 29 while Gayle has 17. Ashleigh’s 23 steals lead the team. Four others have between 12 and 17 steals. Three others have 9 steals apiece.
The Horns are shooting a meager 40.9% from the field. They are an average 33.9% from BTA. In conference, they are holding players to 38.9% on FGs and 28.2% from BTA. For the Horns, their FT shooting is a poor 66.9%, down from the low 70s in preseason play. They continue to have trouble rebounding as they average 37.6 rpg while allowing opponents to grab 37.2 rpg.

KSU should be starting their usual five. The Horns starting five is subject to change but could be the same as the last few games.

Projected Starting Lineups:

Texas KSU

Earnie Zanotti
Carla Lehning
Brit Sweat
Ashleigh Kincaid
Lindsey Gipson [/pre]

For the Horns, they will use their ten or eleven player rotation to see if they can tire out KSU’s iron women. They will try to run while KSU will try to slow the game down. Rebounding will be important to allow the Horns to run. Neither team has been able to consistently impose their will on the boards. The one who does will dictate the tempo and will have the best chance to win. The Horns will have a sizeable

advantage inside. If both Ashleys can stay out of foul trouble, they should be able to force KSU into taking outside shots, not their best suit. Gipson, although only 6-0, has more blocks (30) than the 6-4 Lindsey (29 blocks). She has only fouled out of one league game. She will also force the Horns to depend more on their outside shot. Not only is controlling the boards a necessity, but being able to hit the mid range to long range shots will help to determine the winner of this contest. If the Texas pressure can force TOs, they will take away precious possessions from KSU’s slow down offense and increase their own chances to get more shots. KSU does have eight players averaging double digit minutes per game but three of their starters average at least 34 minutes and a fourth 31 minutes. And Lehning still cannot be fully recovered from her illness. Of course, that might just be wishful thinking on my part. Both teams need this win. KSU is really good at home. It should be a great game.

This game will on FoxSportsNet KC. Looks like we folks here in Austin may be stuck listening to the radio. I’m getting spoiled being able see the games either on TV or online.

Just FYI...if anyone has directv the game is listed right now on channel 672.

Great preview BabHorn, thanks....and

GO HORNS!!!!

Texas visits KSU during Wildcat Senior Night for Marlies Gipson, Shalee Lehning, Kelsey Nelson and Danielle Zanotti. Lots of good info in their story.

I'll have to check to see if this game will actually be on FSN. Womensbasketballonline.com show the game on FSN. And the online TimeWarner schedule shows a WBB game starting at 7pm. While it may not be Texas at KSU, I sure hope it is. [fingers crossed]

We got to have some energy and passion for basketball tonite ladys. Got to start getting ready for the NCAA Tourn. And we must have at least 3 players in double figures.Lets beat them down

Babhorn the game is on T.V tonite on 2 Fox Sports Channels
Thanks for the articles you do all the time. I look forward to them. Keep up the good work!

the texassports preview said the game will be on Time Warner 54, but it's not showing up on my guide. i was able to find it in the 400s, though, if you have the sports package. FSCEN channel 432.

LET'S GO HORNS! set the tempo early...can't let KSU slow the game down.

6-7 KSU Good start for the Horns before they got sloppy, losing the ball which led to a Kincaid 3. Horns need to take care of the ball. They need to shoot the ball when they got the shot instead of trying to make the extra pass.

Wow. this is gonna be a tough game. 3 blocks already though, and AT with some rebounding!!

looks like everyone has scored for Texas. Gayle and Lindsey are really making it difficult for KSU; They have four blocks so far--two each.

Lehning looks good so far. No signs of fatigue. Couple of good moves to score brings KSU to 20-15. Texas leads.

Lindsey is out with two fouls. She probably sits the rest of the half. Without her, the Horns don't a consistent scorer inside. Gayle has taken a couple of shots that have missed.

bad foul by Brit, frustration foul after a TO by Earnie. KSU up 29-25. Texas has the ball. That dark red numbers on black make it hard for me to tell the time.

poor D at the end and Gipson scores after KSU put the ball in play with about 6 seconds left.

KSU up 31-25.

Horns need to come out after the half with the drive and passion they've shown in waco and ames. stop the to's, please....
