And no, I never drink the Kool-Aid. (I guzzle it.) But this year, there are simply too many positive signs to ignore. Just a few.:

The head coach is unhesitatingly saying that we have a “very special team.” He’s not saying that we have a “good team.” He’s saying that we have a very special team. Also, he keeps emphasizing the depth.

We have the easiest schedule imaginable, with the exception being Tuscaloosa, which I think will be a W. (Reminds me a bit of Columbus in 2005. The opponent never loses a night game at home, right?) The only arguably somewhat tough games on paper will be in Austin (or Dallas).

We really are deep, and we have elite/NFL talent at not just at a few positions.

The addition of AD Mitchell will, in my opinion, be a significant difference-maker. What team can defend Mitchell/Neyor, Worthy, Whittington, and Sanders, all on the field at the same time? There isn’t one, including Bama. So if Ewers just improves incrementally, we should be very good. If he improves substantially, this will truly be a special year.

Finally, the culture. Or as Sark likes to say, being intentional. I’ve listened to many of the players and to a man, they seem to have fully bought in and are driven. The camaraderie, and the mutual goal, is impossible to ignore.

The debate over who should be the starting center will tear this team apart. In fact it has already started on horns fans. Expect it to get worse.

Just an early start on the 1st time we fail to convert a 3rd down:

"Fire Sark NOW. Bench Quinn NOW! Pull Whittington's scholly NOW!! Tar & Feather Kwiatkowski NOW!!! WE'RE DOOMED!!!!!!"

out of curiosity, I took a look at the roster Mack fielded in “his” third season, 2000. That team went 10-2, and lost to Oregon in the Holiday Bowl – a game I attended and left early, due to frustration.

What surprised me looking back was the level of talent on that team. You may want to go back and take a look, but it included Shaun Rogers, Casey, Hampton, Cory Redding, Roy Williams, Chris Simms, Applewhite, and Bo Scaife, among others. They lost unexpectedly to Stanford at Palo Alto (another game I saw attended. - Tiger Woods was walking the Stanford sideline) and they were blown out by Oklahoma. Saw that one too. In fact, I might’ve been the reason Texas lost any games that year as I was always there to witness them.

Regardless, Mack had a very good roster in 2000 and he still lost three games. Even so, looking at this roster and the extremely favorable schedule, I continue to have very high expectations.

2000 was also the "Mack McChicken" year when we canceled our game with Hawaii due to "prices." June Jones had about a 6-month run of free press, blasting Texas every chance he got. They replaced us with Portland State on the schedule and lost to them by 4 TDs.

That Stanford game was one of the instances that spelled doom for Major. I think no matter how hard he tried or how big a blowout against an inferior opponent seemed, there would always be people calling for Simms. When Major re-hurt his knee against Tech, that was it. Until the CCG the following season.

Never understood the Hawaii cancellation. Was making good money and would have gone on a long vacation. Hopefully not eaten by a shark, but the scenery would have been nice while I was devoured. Too much Shark Week + Jaws, etc.

I was engaged at the time and my fiance and I were going to that Hawaii game and were going to be married while in Hawaii.
Thank God that game was canceled.

11 & uta,

Cost had nothing to do with cancelling Hawaii. If you go back and look at the teams that played in Hawaii, the following week they all laid an egg in their next game. Those stats came directly from Deloss' mouth. After hearing the explanation, I was glad Deloss cancelled, but my wife was far less enthusiastic.

Which is why I don't get any ACC team voting to add Stanford and Cal. And for VB, BB, SB, BB it's twice as many trips.

And it's not like 1997 where the plane was half full and you could stretch out over 3 seats and sleep. Nowdays I always seem to get the biggest, fattest, smelliest guy on the plane in the middle seat crushing me into the window. Try that for 7 hours and all you want to do is go home and sleep for 2 days.

Which raises the question, why was the game ever scheduled in the first place?

Duke,

Deloss felt an obligation to schedule games that provided alums a "fun place" to visit:

State Penn in NYC
STanford @ Palo Alto and everybody stayed in SFO
UCLA - stay in The People Republic of Santa Monica and drive two hours to West Vegas to play in The Rose Bowl. (Maybe we played in The Coliseum (age & memory lapse)

Hawaii was on that list

We were stationed in Hawaii at the time. We had started working all the things that go along with Texas and Texas fans visiting. We were really disappointed in the cancelation.
