Kolaches

and yes... klobasnik too if you want to be technical.

I'm looking for a good source for decent kolaches in Austin. Yes, I know they'll never be as good or authentic as the ones you can find in tiny towns with heavy Czech influences, like West. Even so, I want to try to find some in Austin.

I recently tried some at a kolache place near where I live, but was thoroughly underwhelmed. So tell me, other Austinites-- where can I find some decent kolaches in this town?

my two favorites are the kolache shoppe on s. congress/oltorf and shipley's on brodie (but i'm from houston, so i'm admittedly biased).

the best are morning's kolaches in clear lake. they put some sort of tasty crack in that bread.

i am not sure if austin has these, and i am sure that it is not authentic or really even a kolache, but the ranchero at kolache factory is one of my favorite ways to start my day.

Thanks utexas_61--

Unfortunately, Kolache Factory is the place that I found to be disappointing. The dough was too sweet on the savory items, IMO. On two different occasions I sampled several items off the menu, and it just didn't hit the spot for me.

I have only had kolaches filled with jelly/cream cheese. But I have heard that some are also filled with sausage. True?

I had some from the Kitchen Door recently and they were pretty damn good.

The Kolache Shoppe on Burnet behind the Dallas Night Club has kolaches that are ever bit as good as the ones you can get in West.

Thanks everyone, I'll definitely check out the Kolache Shop, and the others when I'm in the neighborhood.

There's a little bakery in the strip center at the front of River Place called Rise and Shine Bakery (2222 near 620). The kolaches are the best I've had outside of the small towns. Don't know if it's close to your neighborhood but you should try it sometime.

I used to pick up Kolache Factory alot because it was 3 minutes from our house and had a drive thru. Thought they were good, not great.

Pretty sure you can get them at Prasek's.

I think Lone Star at 38th and Lamar has them with real sausage, but I don't love their dough.

if you're eating a kolache and it doesn't have apricot, prune, cheese, peach or cherries in the middle, it probably ain't a real kolache.

I remember the first time I ate a kolache. I was 21, and it was in Houston. I thought it was the best thing ever.

Lonestar Kolache on the north west corner of 38th and Lamar. They are quite amazing, i havent had one i dislike from there but my favorite has to the sausage, cheese and jalapeno. Game Over.

Thanks Texas_TK, that's actually where I ended up getting them. I wasn't disappointed, either

I know it's not austin, but I gotta put in a plug for the Kolache Shoppe in Taylor. I live there, but about the only time I ever get their kolaches is once a year when I have to bring breakfast in to work. Wow! As I sit here after eating my 4th kolache (klobasnik, cottage cheese, cherry and apricot), I am a happy guy. Definitely the real deal! The klobasniks are made with real czech sausage, a big link, they measure out about 6 inches long. Kolaches - the above mentioned plus peach, prune and poppy seed (and I know I'm only 50% Czech because I HATE poppy seed, blech). Oh, I forgot the apple struedel, I got a half one, about a foot long and about 8 inches across, filled with apples, cinnamon, pecans and raisins, topped with a nice sugary glaze and coconut. Heaven! If you're passing through Taylor some morning (except I think Tuesdays and Sundays), do yourself a favor and stop by.

I could be wrong, but I was always told 'kolache' is the plural of 'kolach' and that there is no such word as 'kolaches'. Am I wrong?

In English, there is a word "kolaches." It's not the first, nor the last, time a non-English word becomes anglicized.

If it has meat in it, it's technically a klobasnik, which is a distinction I made in the very first post on this thread.

However, in Central Texas, they are now all referred to as "kolaches" and they are delicious, so why discriminate?
