Knee Replacement Surgery

My dad has had knee replacement surgery on both of his knees, the second one being this past July. His first knee replacement was 3 years ago and seemed to have been successful, this second one was on a much more deteriorated knee and his recovery isn't going as well.

I guess what I am looking for is anyone who has experienced this procedure or is knowledgeable to give me some insight as to what a successful recovery/ rehab entails.

My dad is a large man (6'3" 280-290lbs) and I have no doubt his being overweight has had a direct effect on his knee problems, so the first place he has to start is there, or so I think. My real concern is I don't know what kind of exercises he should be doing. Weight-training, walking, machines? He did his doctor mandated rehab for a month after surgery at a rehab center but that was more for range of motion and flexibility than strengthening his knee. I would like to know what people who have made a successful recovery did and what sort of routine they followed. Appreciate it in advance.

I would think his orthopedist would be willing to order additional physical therapy if the patient is having problems. The physical therapist could also put together an effective home exercise program.

I'm 54 and had both knees replaced (at the same time) 3 years ago. It took me a full two months to get to the point where I felt confident in getting around on my own. I went throug about 6 weeks of therapy. My dr. wouldn't let me drive until 2 months post-op. One knee felt like it was good to go after a month. The other knee was much more problematic - very stiff and wouldn't allow my leg to fully stretch out. Didn't get full range of motion on that knee until the 3 or 4 month period. Today, I'm doing really well and am thankful I had the surgery done. Feel like a totally different person and walk without pain. One thing that is likely is that your dad will never have full range motion in the "flex" position. It just won't ever be the same, but I don't consider. that to be a big deal. Once I was back on my feat and had finished with all my rehab, I joined a gym and worked out on the elliptical machine. Prior to the surgery, I'd never used the machine, but now it's my main base for aerobic exercise. It helped me a great deal, given that it strengthens the legs and muscles that support the knee without any pounding on the knees. Bottom line - suggest that he use an elliptical machine - it really helped me out. Good luck!

thanks for the feedback, that's exactly the info I was looking for
