Kitchen mandoline recommendation?

I picked up the OXO mandoline at Sur La Table about a year ago. It was top-rated by Good Housekeeping and at ~$70 seemed like a good buy. I've only tried a basic feature, like simple slices of tomatoes, and it didn't work very well.

I've been eyeing the more expensive ($150+) models for years but didn't think they could be worth it. However, I don't mind spending the $$ if the quality is superior.

Does anyone else have the Oxo? If so, how does it work for you? If you own another model, how do you like it? Thanks.
 
I too have an OXO and I cant get a potato down the damn thing without fear of hacking off my digits.

I know that doesnt really help you, but at least you can go to sleep knowing someone else fell into the OXO mandoline pitfall.
 
I have a super fancy one that I picked up from williams-sonoma. it comes with a hard case, and an instructional dvd. it is great. however, I wouldn't recommend it for small fruits and vegetables. for that I'd get a handheld ceramic slicer.
 
I have two of the small ceramic mandolines (one for slices and one for ribbon cuts) that work great. I think each only cost around 15 dollars, but I have basically taken the end of of my knuckle a few times being stubborn and wanting every pit of the veggie.
 
I have the same one hornimal has - the de Buyer Professional.

I love it, but don't have anything to compare it to.

The OXO is always rated high in what I read.

And band aids are a must - I keep them in the box that comes with the mandolin.
 
Smoky, it is some consolation that I'm not the the only one who had trouble with the Oxo model. I'm going to try to return that thing, it's practically brand new.

Yes, the de Buyer is the one I always see at Williams Sonoma, although the $15 ceramic one doesn't sound half bad...
