Kirk Bohls commentary

My post on the Texas v. Stanford thread:

When a member of the media calls a coach aloof, it is because the coach has better things to do than sit around with some knucklehead writer. Also, Bohls is pissed at Texas because Mack will not let him watch practice.

The Bohls article present a fair assessment of where the program is. Two statements stand out - GG's statement about not hiring a coach she did not know and Bohls' observation that Texas is falling further behind aggy and Baylor. GG's statement shows someone didn't do a good job in the hiring process as someone from the Texas side should have helped her understand the dynamics of coaching in Texas. She could have found out about any potential coach with ties to Texas high schools by asking. Very devastating decision which most of the fault lies at the feet of the AD for not properly briefing the coach during the hiring process.

As Bohls' points out, Texas seems to be making progress, but aggy and Baylor continue to make greater progress which means Texas is losing ground. Even with aggy running away next year, this is going to be the issue which will eventually decide GG's fate.

Excellent points Viperhorn. One glaring problem about Goestenkors is how she points out the obvious yet doesn't appear to take any accountability for her decisions. But yes, while Texas is getting better, the rift between the upper echelon and Texas continues to widen.

Goestenkors has dug herself a big hole and unless a miracle somehow smiles at her, I do not see any reason to believe Texas mentioned in the lines of being elite for the foreseeable future.

Goestenkors had recruiting two high profile kids from the State of Texas while at Duke - Lindsey Harding and Karima Christmas (though Gail took the Texas job after Christmas had signed, so Goestenkors never actually coached her).

In one area of the country, the AAU coaches dominate. In the other area, the high school coaches dominate. Gail was used to recruiting with the AAU coaches (the DC/MD/VA area springs to mind). In Texas, it is the opposite (or maybe I have it reversed). In any event, I think she underestimated the strength and power of the intra-state relationships and it took her some time to adjust.

Plus, it is extremely common when a new coach comes over to bring her staff.

The decline among women's sports has been pronounced during the past 6 years, although Jody had been sliding to mid-tier before that.

Golf, BB, tennis, soccer and softball programs have been perenial underperformers for our resources.
Swimming was allowed to decline but has rebounded.

Track is the enigma. Bev is one of the best coaches around and the program was once dominant, but her recent teams have been lower tier in conference and extremly erratic, and, on occasion, abysmal in the NCAAs.

Plonsky has too much of the Mack Brown family atmosphere and coaching loyalty syndrone. ATM's women's programs have passed their Texas counterparts save swimming and volleyball.

I agree! We just allow Coaches to stay too long as the Coach of a program. Swimming and Volleyball are Outstanding. Track has been inconsist. Along with Womens Golf, but they are progressing.Soccer,Softball need to step up.

I agree, and we obviously keep some ADs too long! Chris has been so busy being one of the good old boys around here, she's let all of the women's team settle for mediocrity.... just the way the good old boys like it!
