Killer Instinct

It is coached. It is a mindset, to stay completely focused and continue to stay aggressive and demand execution whether you are up by 3 or up by 30. We don’t have that. Sark is the example. He will go for it on fourth down seemingly from anywhere on the field, but goes ultra conservative when trying to control the clock. Tcu had at least 9 if not all 11 within 8 yards of the line and we didn’t throw anything beyond a couple of yards past the line until the last pass to Mitchell which required him to make a great play (wonder if that was instilled in him at Georgia).

Don’t see us jumping Oregon, unless they lose again, playoffs are not likely imo. Love Sark…about to get us into the Big XII Championship game, but he just hasn’t shown the skill set to put a team away when up big - UH, K State, TCU. You’re using a term I’ve used to describe him, no killer instinct.

I have a relative who was an all-time winner. Won at everything, all the time, against all competition. I thought it was all natural like a God-given, but he said it came from confidence and continued to build from his reputation.

The problem with our Horns is that, at this point, the competition knows we can’t finish. Instead of fear factor, there’s just confidence that if they can hang around, they’ll have an opportunity in the end.

Unfortunately, the killer instinct we are hoping for will not show up consistently this season.

Sark needs to look in the mirror then. Texas had a 3rd and 1 at the 30 after Brooks had a nine yard run on second down. Sark calls a long sideways wide receiver screen to Cook instead of a run or short pass up the field which was open a lot. Get that first down, keep them on their heels and maybe the game is different.

This brings up a glaring problem with our team compared to the other successful teams we’re chasing at the moment, and that is two of our biggest stars on offense are bad if not flat out terrible blockers. Not sure if we call out players here, but it’s obvious. On this particular play, if one of our stars blocks the guy in front of him, and Cook takes it to the sideline, we get the first down. Happens to this player and another often. Great teams make those blocks.

I 100% believe the collapses have less to do with players and almost everything to do with coaches and play calling.

This is a dominant team with more talent on the bench than most teams have on the field. It's OBVIOUS the schemes and play calling tendencies completely change in the second half. It's almost like we get the lead and then coaches say, "Ok boys, lets try not to lose this one".

We settled for a mediocre coach when we hired him. I think he is doing the best that he can. He is not going to be a Saban or a top tier coach. I am tired of hiring coaches here. We may as well settle for being a one or 2 loss team every year or try again. We have the talent to compete on a national level but continue to underachieve. Maybe we shouldnt make fun of Jimbo for being an underachiever.Poop if you must but this is my opinion.

We were a 1 or 2 loss team throughout Mack Brown's golden years. 2005 was the lone glorious exception. We were worse than that his first few seasons, and fell off a cliff after 2009.

You need to re-calibrate your expectations, in my opinion. If you have set
"satisfactory performance" = Saban's Alabama run, you're never going to be happy.

Sangre-So you are telling me that we should be happy with a 1 or 2 loss team every year? I guess expectations have changed with our fan base.

Sangre,Yes I was and I remember the times when one loss ruined a season for fans players and coaches. He taught the killer instinct and the winning attitude. He didnt play not to lose.

Agreed, but also due to the pass defense.

1. Texas gets a lead and wants to run the ball and run out the clock. Texas does not have the OL to run the ball at will and run out the clock. Texas MUST keep mixing in the pass even if it means incompletions and no time taken off the clock. The alternative is worse, and now even more worse with Brooks likely gone for the season. One player still gets no push at all. Why not give Neto a chance, or convert Williams to G? I've seen some good push from Williams.

2. Texas 2 min, late game pass defense is horrible. If the opposition ran that same offense the whole game I wonder how many losses Texas would have? Fortunately, our opponents think they need a running game. It's comical how people like to brag about the Texas run defense. Who cares when the pass defense is so bad?

It depends on the schedule, but Texas has only beat on team will equal talent and probably because Milroe was still doing a lot of learning.

Texas lost to a team that got beat by okie lite. The same okie lite team that got destroyed by some directional school in FL that has had 2 good seasons in their 40+ year history. Texas is barely getting by schools with mostly 2 and 3 start athletes just like TCU did last year. TCU finally played a real team and got destroyed. It's funny people claim TCU was lucky last year, but Texas has not been lucky this year.

Anything more than 1 loss is the regular season this year is underachieving based on how bad the B12 is. And if Texas does somehow make the playoffs it's going to be embarrassing.

Agree with both, but both are directly related to scheme and play calling. The biggest player issue i see is when the DB's finally catch the wide open receivers after they are placed 20 yards downfield, there's almost zero effort in the second half.
