Killer BLTs

From the Astros message board:

"Just take it in order in making the sandwich and you have it.

Bourn = Bread
Matsui = Mayo
Tejada = Tomato
Berkman = Bacon
Lee = Lettuce
Pence = Pickle
Wigginton = Wrap for the sandwich
Towles = Toothpick to hold the wrap

Cooper = Coke to drink"

If I heard correctly, should Berkman go 1 for 3 tomorrow, he will have tied Pete Rose for the best batting average of any player in the history of baseball over a 30 AB stretch.

Previous to this game, Berkman, having gone 19-25, was the only player in 50 years, along with Pujols, to have such success over a 25 AB stretch.

In the previous 30 AB stretch before this game, Berkman was on 24 out of 30 plate appearances; the next closest similar historical performance in recent history was Ricky Henderson making it on base 21 out of 30 plate appearances in 1985, if I heard the announcers correctly (they might have said 1981.)

Of course, in order to confirm for the 128918210 time that ESPN is biased, deadhead hack sports journalism of the highest order, just moments ago, while showing the highlights from the STL/MIL game, one of them said, as Ludwick knocked in the GW hit in the 9th, "Is anyone hotter than Ludwick right now? No."

Over the last 7 days, Ludwick is batting .524.

Over the same period, Lance Berkman is batting .800.

The whole team has been playing great. In a post a couple of weeks ago I asked if we had buried the Astros too early after a rough start. Most seemed to think that the Astros hadn't proved anything yet. I still think this team will be in the race in September.

I'm very impressed with the way both the Rangers and Astros are playing. Should be an entertaining series next weekend in Arlington.

As much as I enjoy watching Mike and Mike, I don't think I ever heard them talk about Lance. All they ever seem to talk about when it comes to baseball is the Yankees and Red Sox.

7 singles for six runs in the eighth to finish the sweep of LA on the road, after being no-hit for six and two/thirds innings.

I am really beginning to enjoy this team.

You knew we would at least tie the game at three each in the last two innings. Chacon was the SP, so we had to preserve his attempt to make it to the all-star break as the only full time SP in baseball to have no decisions.

Bourn's catch in the ninth inning was outstanding, and it was well deserved considering how he was robbed earlier by the Dodger's centerfielder in the seventh with the bases loaded. His defense has been great, both fielding and throwing out runners at home. I know is offense is poor at the moment, but, he has been the victim of a bit of bad luck and he is still adjusting as a rookie.

I think his OBP will come up significantly if they stand by him throughout the year, and if it rises to a bit lower than the average or around average for leadoff hitters, his prowess at stealing bases combined with the offensive skill behind him in the lineup should lead to an acceptable amount of runs scored compared with the leadoff hitters throughout the league.

As it stands, he is already on pace to have 77 steals. Now, if he begins to get solid at the plate, then he could end up with more steals by the end of the year than anyone since Rickey Henderson and Vince Coleman were roaming the basepaths.

If he greatly improved at the plate, how cool would it be to be nearing the end of the year wondering if he could get 100?

Agreed, both those catches were pretty wild.

That was a fantastic comeback. From being no-hit through 6 2/3 to 8 runs against a good bullpen. Wow. Even Ausmus managed to get one through a pulled in infield. To complete a sweep of los dogers in lalaland? That doesnt happen very often. And they were pretty hot going into the series.

For the younger folks who dont know, this was the team for an Astro fan to hate in the early years. I doubt they considered us their rival, but we hated them with a burning red hot passion (the Lakers through much of the same era too). It got so bad when Lasorda was there, HPD was permanently posted to the top of los doger dugout in the Dome. Every half-inning, 6 or so HPDs would stand up and walk along the dugout. All game, every game they were in town. Their catchers back then were also much hated -- Yeager, Fergusen and Scioscia. Something about the way they blocked the plate. And all their pitching over the enitre period was just unfair.

There may have been specific periods where other teams, like the Reds and Mets, were pretty hated too, back in the day. But the blue got it for the entire period. I have never seen Houston fans consistently hurl beer and insults at a manager or team in any sport like them (Oiler gamers at Robertson or Rice could get pretty out of hand too).

The change in division format altered all the blue-hate. But for those of us who have been watching a long time, a sweep there still means just a little bit more.

To complete a sweep of los dogers in lalaland?

Lance _really_ wanted to play here you know.

I wish I knew why we didn't offer him something.

Someone, somewhere, really knows why or is the truth buried now.
