I remember Sean Hugo taking one off the pole in Omaha against him in the 9th (or thereabouts) to tie it up. I think you guys ended up winning in extras. Pretty crazy moment with Hugo rounding the bases and talking ****, while Brooks is sending it right back at him.
Congrats to him; he was certainly a hell of a player.
I remember the game where he hit the homerun that he thought was the most meaningless homeruns of his career. It only started the 8 run rally in the bottom of the ninth when we came back to beat Miami. One of the best baseball games I have ever seen period.
The #21 is no longer on the wall at DFF. Instead, the 5 numbers that they are retiring this year and the players that wore them are on the concrete wall underneath the suites. I believe the 5 posted players are: Brooks, Swindell, Dressendorfer, Clemens, and Hooten. M y understanding is that all 5 were supposed to be "retired" at different games this year.
I will always remember his gutsy pitching performance against Oklahoma State. That was about as courageous a performance I have ever seen. He took what was a rather bad team, the 1993 Texas team, and made them great single handedly.
I will also always remember the grand slam Pepperdine hit off of him in the 1992 series. Brooks was spectacular even in defeat.
Once back in his high school days he was at the plate with men on base in the bottom of the 9th in a Carroll High School playoff game at Cabaniss Field, here in Corpus Christi. The local ABC affiliate, KIII, went live with a shot from the game during the 6 o'clock news.
And, I'll be damned if he didn't hit a walk off homer right then and there on live TV! I sent a clipping from the next day's local newspaper to Robert Heard at InsideTexas and he quoted from the article in his next newsletter. Truly one of the great athletes to come out of south Texas.
I remember making my girlfriend wait to go to dinner because ESPN was showing Kieschnick at bat (Cubs vs Expos I believe) and of course I went on about how great he was and what a god he was at Texas and just as she rolled her eyes, he jacks one.
I miss Brooks playing baseball more than I miss her.
