The Richard Wright post mentioned Syd Barrettm, which got me thinking about an odd list- musicians who were kicked out of bands that they formed, or were instrumental in forming. I've got Syd Barrett from Pink Floyd, and Brian Jones from the Rolling Stones. Any others?

Perhaps one of the greatest rock bands of our generation - CREED. They kicked out their lead singer.

Chuck Negron - Three Dog Night.

Grace Slick - Jefferson Airplane.

Slick actually replaced Signe Anderson before the band hit big.

I always thought that Stu Cook and Doug Clifford were asked by John Fogerty to leave Creedence Clearwater Revival.

Wikipedia doesn't fully support that scenario:

Al Kooper left Blood, Sweat and Tears after their first album and was replaced by David Clayton-Thomas.

Kooper went on to discover and produce Lynyrd Skynyrd.

I believe the orignal lead singe of Poison was kicked out. They then hired Brett Michaels as a replacement. He then took over the band and basically made them what they are.

EDIT: Hmmm, according to Wikipedia I was wrong. But their original guitarist left because he wasn't sure where the band was headed, and was replaced by C.C. Deville.

Not sure it counts but David Knopfler was in the original lineup of Dire Straits but got kicked out. There is a line from one song on "Making Movies" that says:
"When you point your fingers cause your plan fell through,
There'll be 3 more fingers, pointing back at you"

I don't know if this counts, because I don't know if she formed the band and it changed names afterward, but...Lou Ann barton and Triple Threat dropped her and became Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble.

Stevie Ray formed the band 'Triple Threat Review' after the Cobras broke up in the early seventies. He invited Lou Ann to join, which she did and he also talked W. C. Clark out of retirement. Along with some other musicians, TTR performed until the late seventies. Lou Ann and W. C. both decided they would like to have solo careers, so they left the band of their own free will...absolutely no hard feelings. SRV kept the band going and it morphed into Double Trouble in 1979, when he partnered up with Steve Layton. Tommy Shannon joined in 1981 and Reese Wynans in 1985.

Also, on a side note...LAB was the lead singer for the 'Thunderbirds' prior to joining 'Triple Threat Review', and she now performs regularly with Jimmie Vaughn...has for several years.

Peter Criss (first in 1980, then again in the early 2000's), and Ace Frehley (first in 1982, then again shortly after Criss in the early 2000s) from KISS. Although they both joined the band after Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons broke up their previous band (Wicked Lester) to form KISS.

Every member of Journey except Neil Schon.

The original drummer for RUSH.

MOST bands do not keep their original lineup throughout their existence.
