Kicked in my door

What a great way to start the day. I went outside to pick up the paper and locked myself out. Being late for work, I kicked the back door in.

Now I have a blasted door frame. How should I go about repairing this? I even tore up a bit of drywall. Should I tear everything out on that side of the frame and rebuild it? Do I need a new frame?

I think I'm going the repair route because it is too easy to kick in a door. No sense in dealing with a new frame when it can be busted just as easily as a repaired one.

Any ideas?

If you want a really secure door, I'd go get a steel door in a steel frame and install it. And make sure the door has a double-cylinder deadbolt and no window(s), or at least window(s) that are very small and away from the doorknob/deadbolt. Don't leave a key in the deadbolt inside the house. If you do that, it defeats the purpose of a double-cylinder....

If you just want to rebuild, remove the old frame VERY carefully and use it as a template for the new one. At the very least, I'd use very long screws for the hinges and latch plates into the doorframe (>/3inches long). Also use long screws and/or nails to attach the frame to the house. There are also some steel plates you can buy to reinforce frame attachment, locks and latches.

The main thing is to be very careful reinstalling the door/frame. Make sure it's square and level and that the door opens, closes, and latches easily.

Thanks. The steel door is no bueno because I may need to kick it in again some day.

You must have a high paying job! Thirty minutes saved may cost you anywhere from $250-$300!

Leave a spare key hiden somewhere outside or give a spare key to a neighbor that you trust.
