TVCC ended up an undefeated season (36-0) with their sixth NJCAA WBB championship.

Kenya's profile from the TVCC website:

Kenya Landers enters her 2nd season as The Lady Cards Head Coach. Finishing her first season with a record of 34-3 and finishing as Runner Ups at the NJCAA National Tournament. Prior to her return to TVCC she was a assistant at LSU under Hall of Fame Coach Van Chancellor, where both teams made NCAA tournament appearances and signed top 10 recruiting classes in the Country. Prior to LSU, she spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Oklahoma State University for former Lady Cardinal head coach Kurt Budke. The Cowgirls made NCAA Tournament appearances in 2007 and ’08, advancing to the Sweet 16 in ’08.

The Duncanville native played a key role as point guard as the Lady Cardinals posted the college’s first-ever perfect season (36-0) and fourth national title in six years. In her two years at the college, the Lady Cardinals were 60-6. Kenya was named the nation’s fourth-best point guard as a sophomore and earned all-region and all-conference honors before moving on to the University of Texas.

At Texas, she played in all 65 of the Lady Longhorns’ games in her two seasons, starting 63 games, including all 32 games as a senior. She led the team in assists both years. Her senior year at The University she led the Lady Longhorns to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Tournament. She was also named MVP of her team as a junior and senior, a selection that was made by her teammates.

Kenya played professionally overseas for two seasons, leading her European Pro League (Israel) team to the playoffs twice. She was third in the league in scoring her first season and was named the league’s Point Guard of the Year. She was also an all-league selection both years.

She earned her bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Texas in 2002.

Kenya is Married to Co-Head Coach of the Lady Cards Michael Landers and they have one Daughter, Michaela.

Congrats Kenya!

She is building quite a resume for herself. In HS her Dunvcanville team went undefeated and won the 5A State Championship, and at Trinity her team went undefeated and won the NJCAA National Championship. At Texas she was our team MVP when we made our return to the Sweet 16. And she was an Asst at OSU for three years, and they also made the Sweet 16 while she was there, and then she was an Asst at LSU for two seasons. And now she's coached TVCC to their 6th National Championship, and second undefeated season (having been a player on their first). Congratulations, Kenya! And I think this is the second NJCAA national championship team her husband has coached, and he was HC at East Texas Baptist and led them to two NCAA Div II national runner-up finishes before moving on to TVCC for his first stint there.

I also heard a rumor that we had been recruiting a 2013 PG from TVCC. It's just a rumor, and I didn't get a name. But, it wouldn't be hard to find.

She was the MVP of the team that year? Didn't we have Heather Schrieber and Stacy Stephens on that squad? Pretty impressive.

Nothing new on the net, just the original story in the Athens online newspaper. As I said, one source had the deal already done, but when the Athens paper asked Kenya, she said no decision had been made. Of course that could mean they just hadn't worked out all of the details, and she wasn't ready to talk about it yet, no way to know for sure. One thing's for certain, though..unless they had signed on the dotted line, they would rush to Texas in a heartbeat if the opportunity presented itself...but it does seem like a longshot. And I don't think we have any openings as for assistants either, so it looks likley they will end up at Ole Miss.

Nothing against Kenya as sh has had success at every level, but if her best offer right now is to become an assistant coach at Ole Miss, that sort of implies that there aren't any Division I programs offering her a head coaching position.

I know that's a big assumption. Perhaps she doesn't want to be a head coach right now at a Division I school.

I would be okay if the new Texas head coach ended up hiring her as an assistant coach.

I think the issue is that she and her husband are a package deal, which makes sense, but it does mean a school would have to hire both as co-head coaches, or have two assistant openings at the same time. That probably limits their options quite a bit. I know that he left his first stint at TVCC, where he had already won a NC, and took a position in Baton Rouge solely to be close to Kenya while she was at LSU. Of course the next year they returned to Trinity as a team, and I assume that's the way it's going to for them from here on out. That's all speculation on my part, but it's based on their prior actions, and what he said when he left Trinity the first time.
