Pot smoking and gay marriage legal as of midnight in Washington state. Washington state must be kind of like Austin on a state-wide basis.

It will be interesting to see if Holder's Justice Dept sues Washington state for violating federal drug laws, like he went after Arizona's immigration policies . I'll bet not.

Not a toker and didn't vote to legalize pot but I completely understand the rational justification to legalize/tax it. It'll be a year before the state can write the rules and setup a legal system to distribute it. I'm expecting state run grow houses/stores.

With that said, local news says a citizen can now carry up to 1oz and be legal even if they got the pot through illegal means. A local pot-rights groups planned to celebrate in a local county building until they realized King County (Seattle area) has pretty strict smoking laws. Can't smoke in public buildings or within 25ft of the door.

Gay marriage? I voted for it. Some of the best parents I know are gay couples and it doesn't impact me or my family one bit. They'll now have to pay the same marriage penalty (taxes) that I do and most make much more.

I support the legalization of pot even though I have never toked myself. However, the most interesting part of the weed legalization story which the media has chosen to ignore is the nullification aspect - probably because most of them are potheads. It will be interesting to see how the media and the White House respond when certain red states nullify Obamacare.

An interesting aspect to the law was that it was opposed by recipients of medical marijuana on the grounds that the level set for a "DUI" for Marijuana were set so low. A heavy user with a high tolerance could toke before bed to ease their pain then drive to work in the morning at 5x the legal limit of THC in their blood. Evidently the body doesn't process this stuff NEAR as fast as alcohol.
