Katz predicts Horns win national title in 09

Dr. Katz is smarter than most.

I don't mind seeing Texas with pre-season accolades, but I would want someone who juxtaposes "why" and "why not" scenarios to look a little more closely at the known uncertainties of a team, and not just say there's no chance if DJ leaves.

Katz should say something to the effect that Texas didn't come up with a reliable inside scoring threat in 2006-07. While Pittman, Chapman, Hill, Atchley, Wangmene, and Gary Johnson each show at least some promise at providing inside scoring, none of they have shown to date that they can be counted on to force defensive adjustments that might open up the game for outside shooters.

I think Texas will get a lot more post production next year, but I really thought it would have gotten more going into the 2006-07 season. Atchley proved himself to be an effective outside shooter, but at the expense of his offensive rebounding and post development. Pittman had flashes, but little production in most games. Hill was hurt. Johnson was behind the curve due to sitting out the first half of the season, and it still remains to be seen if he will be completely effective against bigger defenders in college. Chapman wasn't quite ready for the speed of the college game. Wangmene is active as hell, but needs a little control.

There are definitely enough ingredients for a title run next year, but there are still uncertainties that have to be acknowledged. So, pick us No. 1, but hope Pittman is ready to play 20+ a game, Atchley holds position better, Hill gets to full strength, Chapman gets stronger and quicker, Wangmene gets better control, and Johnson makes bigger men look silly.

Should be a great year.

We made the second round last year. If Durant had stayed another year, we could've been an Elite 8 team this year.

That Big XII title game looms really large now. I know hind sight is 20/20, but had we had Kansas' road we could very likely have been playing in the title game as well. After looking at what KU did to UNC, had we had an opportunity to play anyone of the other Final Four teams I feel confident we would have won...Memphis was just worst possible match-up for us.

Looking towards next year though, we have all the ingredients to be a wire to wire #1 type of ball club. Hopefully we get to add a little size in our back court with the addition of J'covan Brown, our post presence will definitely be something we improve upon in the offseason(we have the bodies, just need them to develop), and the overall level of experience we'll have(2nd Round; Elite 8; Nat'l Champ??). Seems a natural progression!
