Kasparek to go Friday

vs. St. Johns leaving Ruffin for the Saturday start(hopefully in the winners bracket). I'm totally behind Augie and staff with this decision.

gosh, I'm glad Hornfans is approving who Augie picked to pitch. I was worried he had forgotten how to manage.

was that really necessary horn? i have never questioned augie or have come across as knowing more than the most successful coach in history. but i understand your sarcasm.

I think it had more to do with rice but Augie can't come out and say that(would be looking as if he was overlooking st johns). rice hit kk very hard earlier this year, granted kk didn't have his arm strength back, but they still pounded him and chance pitched well in relief vs. the owls. i also think it might have something to do with opening game jitters and going with the experience.

I think the experience is probably the key. Augie has lots of different ways he can go.

i will continue to live by two maxims that i have learned in my time as a Horns fan:

1. Never doubt Vince Young
2. Never doubt Augie

This should surprise no one. Think of how the starters were used in OKC. The only one who didn't throw Sunday was Kenn. Ruffin threw 1 inning. Wood went more than 3. There's no reason to expect anything but KK, Ruffin and Wood, in that order.

St. John's has three starters with excellent records and ERA's. One is mentioned as a high draft pick, and will probably start against Texas. Another is a tricksy slow throwing lefty, which we have traditionally had problems with.
So we can't just rest the good starters and save them for Saturday and Sunday.
You have to win the first game Friday, and KK has regional experience. Augie feels Kasparek is the best choice to get us off to a good start, hope he is right. Although KK may have the best stuff on the team, he is maybe not yet 100% consistent, and Augie feels Ruffin has a better shot of delivering the best start against Rice. We shall see.

tough to doubt garrido but this is a move that looks fantastic if you win but sucks if you lose. if you can face rice w ruffin you look fantastic but if you have to play losers bracket and throw ruffin it sure makes winning it all much tougher.

It was apparent to me that there was no other way that Augie would go than to start KK. It's the right decision too. I want Ruffin going against Rice. He's our best big game pitcher.

I hope they throw Barnes against us. I'd rather face the harder throwing lefty. Junk balling lefties like Justin Simmons make me more nervous. Their stats are a little deceiving given the conference they play in.

People put too much stock into stats. Texas has beaten good pitchers before. A&M has a pretty good pitching staff of their own, and none of them managed to handle Texas. Rob Childress said no one had gotten to Brooks Raley all year until they played Texas. Aaron Crow had a streak of eleventy billion scoreless innings until he played Texas (final score notwithstanding).

What matters is whether or not Brown or Barnes or whoever will be a sub-3.00 pitcher on Friday, and the Texas bats will have a lot to say about that.

I want to go on record as saying it will not matter one bit who we pitch. St. Johns gets a beat down of epic proportions. Gotham Aggy can have a record 1.000 record and ERAs approaching zero. There is no way in hell that a New York team rolls into our regional, yes our regional, and beats the horns. They might be 5 or 6 in all time world series appearances but over the last 20 years they have done nothing to warrant anxiety. I know, I know the baseball gods are getting pissed at this, but come on, even they know that f'n St John himself could not get that team over the hump against Texas.

love the positive vibes, but i'm not sure many would have predicted stanford or uci coming to "our" house and taking "our" regional....anything can happen, but i do think we will get by the red storm.

That is nuts. I was mad as heck last year that they gave us a buzzsaw like UCI when we were a top seed.

I have far more confidence against Rice. But then we know them well.

I understand that stanford had taken two from us and uci was tough as nails, but we are "Texas" and losing home regionals was not in our vocabulary...at least not mine.

I know it might read like overly positive bs, but can anyone image the Horns losing to St. John's? The last two years, we hosed. This year, Rice might take us. But St. John's? Come on! Don't give me the "anything can happen on any given day..." crap. The one time in my lifetime that we lost to Rice in football not one person would have realistically taken the Owls. The year after, it was a sure bet the Owls were going to lose and it has been the case ever sense. St. John's had their once in a lifetime three decades ago.

I would be shocked if we were not playing in the winner's bracket on Saturday, however I would not be shocked at that our Saturday opponent is not Rice. SHSU is a good team that has given Rice fits this year.

St John's should be respected. They have a team BA of .306 and a team ERA of 3.72. In the game of baseball, no matter which league, those are very respectable numbers.

They played Cal State Northridge, Louisville, Notre Dame and Villanova - they deserve respect and to be here.

St. Johns put up a fight in their regional last year if I remember correctly. Our guys are going to have to play and play well to beat them..

You over-optimists are nuts. All it takes is one great starting pitcher, and most teams that make a regional have at least one good starter. St.Johns might not stack up position by position in a comparison with UT, but if their starter is on his best game Friday afternoon, the Horns will have a battle on their hands.
We have seen this before in regional play. A relatively lightweight team can be raised to a high level of play by a great pitching performance by a starter who goes nine innings.
This could turn into one of those 2-1 pitching duels.
In fact, we are doomed, and should just stay home.
