Kansas (16-8, 7-6) has won the last four games in the series. Texas (9-15, 2-11) leads the series 14-10. Texas will try to break a four game losing streak, their second longest this season in Big 12 games. Kansas will look to extend a two game league winning streak.
Kansas brings two players in double figures, Carolyn Davis (# 21, 6-3 Sr. F) at 15.5 ppg and Angel Goodrich (# 3, 5-4 Sr. PG) at 13.1 ppg. Two others are within shouting distance of double digits: Monica Engelman (# 13, 5-11 Sr. G) at 9.2 ppg and Chelsea Gardner (# 15, 6-3 Soph. F) at 8.6 ppg. Of the seven players that have gotten into all 13 games, Davis (79-151, 52.3%) and Gardner (43-77, 55.8%) lead the team in FG%. Goodrich leads in FG attempts at 174 (33.9%) while Davis’ 79 made tops the team. Goodrich (17-68, 25.0%), Asia Boyd (# 0, 6-1 Soph. G; 12-46, 26.1%) and CeCe Harper (# 24, 5-8 Jr. G; 12-40, 30.0%) are the main three pt threats for KU. Engelman (6-23, 26.1%) hits a similar percentage as those but has taken about half the 3s. Davis (44-67, 65.7%), Goodrich (35-52, 67.3%) and Gardner (25-41, 61.0%) are the most frequent visitors to the FT line for the Jayhawks. Boyd (16-18-, 88.9%) and Engelman (23-29, 79.3%) are the ones Texas does not want on the FT line with the game up for grabs.
Gardner (8.2 rpg) and Davis (7.4 rpg) are the top rebounders for Kansas. Goodrich is third at 4.4 rpg. Goodrich leads with 90 assists. While she is one of five with double figure assists, she has three times as much as Engelman who is second with 30. Gardner is the only Jayhawk with more than 8 blocks (Davis) with her total of 32. Four Jayhawks have double digit steals with Goodrich’s 32 leading the field.
Seven players have played in all 13 Big 12 games. KU lost Natalie Knight who was a starter the first eight league games to an ACL. The starters in the last game: Davis, Goodrich, Engelman, Gardner and Harper. Top reserves are Boyd and Bunny Williams (# 5, 6-1 Soph. F). Markisha Hawkins (# 54, 5-9 Jr. G) and Lamaria Cole (# 1, 5-6 Fr. G) both have gotten into three games and average 6 mpg. Goodrich (38.5 mpg) and Davis (33.9 mpg) log the most minutes of the starters. The other three starters average over 20 mpg with Boyd and Williams between 15 and 16 mpg.
Horns are led in scoring by three players averaging double figures: Chassidy (12.4 ppg), Nneka (11.8 ppg) and Imani (10.3 ppg). Empress is just shy of joining them at 8.1 ppg. Those four are the only ones that have taken at least 100 FG attempts: Chassidy (144), Nneka (124), Imani (127) and Empress (117). They are also the best at making their shots: Chassidy (35.4%), Nneka (46.0%), Imani (41.7%) and Empress (38.5%). From BTA, the main shooters are Chassidy (19-72, 26.4%) and Gigi (7-26, 26.9%). Brady continues to lead the team in FT % at 85.0% (17-20) with Nneka (28-40, 70.0%) and Imani (27-36, 75.0%) also making opponents pay for putting them on the line.
Imani leads at 9.2 rpg while Nneka is second at 7.9 rpg. Chassidy (5.8 rpg) and Empress (4.3 rpg) rank third and fourth, respectively. Celina (39), Empress (28) and Chassidy (20) rank 1, 2 & 3 in assists. Imani tops Texas in blocks with 28. Nneka is second with 6. Four players have double digit steals, led by Celina with 17.
Ten players are active for Texas with eight forming the base rotation. Empress (13), Imani (13), Nneka (12) and Chassidy (11) have started every league game they have been available for. Brady (13), Celina (13) and Gigi (11) have played in every league game they have been available for. Sara, Nadia and Kayla come off the bench for Texas. Horns have three players averaging over 30 mpg: Chassidy (35.5), Empress (33.3) and Nneka (31.1). Imani, Celina, Brady, Gigi and Sara all average over 10 minutes per game.
Projected starting lineups:
Texas Kansas
Nneka (6-1 Soph. F) Gardner (6-3 Soph. F)
Imani (6-7 Fr. C) Davis (6-3 Sr. F)
Chassidy (5-10 Jr. G) Engelman (5-11 Sr. G)Empress (5-7 Fr. G) Goodrich (5-4 Sr. PG)
Celina (5-8 Fr. G) Harper (5-8 Jr. G)
The previous meeting was the game that Chassidy and Nneka sat out for disciplinary reasons. Kansas rolled in that game, 76-38. Even without Nneka, Texas outrebounded KU 39-36. One would expect the presence of Nneka and Chassidy to make this a closer game. Goodrich had an outstanding day shooting the ball, going 5-7 from BTA on her way to 20 pts. Empress should provide a sterner challenge this time around after going head to head with every top guard in the league. For Kansas, they will have to be concerned with stopping Chassidy and Nneka, two players they did not have to worry about in the last game. It will be interesting to see if Nneka is matched up against Davis or if Imani will draw that honor.

Kansas roamed the first time these two teams met this season but Texas was without Nneka and Chassidy. Those two should make a difference on both ends of the court. With Goodrich handling the ball, KU will look to run as much as possible. Davis and Gardner give them the rebounds to run. Those two also give them a strong inside game. Texas has few statistical edges going into this game. Texas played as poorly as they have played all season, having trouble making shots, including FTs and handling the ball, giving up 28 TOs and 14 steals. If there was a silver lining, it was that the Horns managed to get 10 steals and only committed 13 fouls. Horns will need to reduce their TOs (a common refrain this season), outrebound KU, and limit KU’s offensive rebounds. In addition, Texas will need to put more pressure on Goodrich to keep her from getting into a shooting rhythm.
