I just moved from South Austin to 620 and 2222 to the Sonterra Apartments. I need some help on the area. Are there any good neighborhood bars or places to eat? Any info on this area will help.

Depends on what you're looking to do. Good eating is a bit of a challenge to find. Step one - discard any place with a large neon sign, or national franchises. They all suck. This rules out the entire Lakeline Mall area (with the noteable exception of a chicken fried steak at LoneStar - ask for Lark's section, she rocks). For good Mexican, head down 183 south to Spicewood Springs, and eat at Camino Real. It ain't pretty, it ain't new, but it ain't bad, neither. Also, Mesa Rosa, on Anderson Mill just past Spicewood Parkway is excellent. For good American, Kerby Lane north is just past Spicewood Springs on 183 - just go through the light and stay on the southbound feeder of 183. It's on your right.

As for neighborhood bars, there are few. Anderson Mill Tavern is on (duh) Anderson Mill Road, near the aforementioned Mesa Rosa, across the street from the 7-11, and across the other street from Spicewood Elementary. Rhino's and Jocks is a decent sports bar at Anderson Mill and 183. Legends Sports Bar is at the Hilton Hotel, 183 and Mopac (a little farther off).

Obviously, you're close to places like the Oasis and Carlos'n'Charlies ... always worth the trip, but rarely worth the money. Anyhow, good luck with the new residence. I really love that area of town. I'm there now, but off to Round Rock at the end of the month to be closer to work.

Head towards town on 2222 and you can get pretty good Mexican at El Mercado (2222 and Jester), or Maudie's Milagro (on 360, just south of the bridge).

For Italian, Reale's isn't bad. They're in the same center as Rhino's and Jock's. They have killer pizza and calzones and a decent menu of standard Italian fare. Go up to 183 and hang a right, and you'll see Saccone's Pizza on your right. New Jersey style pizza, also very good. Better (and pricier) Italian can be found at 2222 and Jester at Bellagio.

You can get a good burger at the Boat House Grill at 620 and 2222.

The bar situation isn't great. Haven't been to Anderson Mill Tavern, and the times I've been to Rhino's you couldn't hear any sports over all the karaoke. Lone Star Cafe has a pretty good bar, though. If you're into beer, check out BB Rovers. It's not too far from you.

There's also a Texadelphia near Lakeline Mall. Same center as Texas Land and Cattle and Barnes and Noble.

I used to live in Sonterra. Nice place. I liked the gym and the pool. Be careful turning left out of there, though. That sucks.

My best friends dad lives in Jester Estates so we're out there pretty often. There are all the options out north in the Arboretum area as well as the Lakeline area. In addition to what others have listed there is an Alligator Grill across 360 as well as County Line on the Lake.

Gotta second Mesa Rosa for pretty decent Mexican food...at least as good as Chuy's w/ little or no waiting required. For bars BB Rover's is a good hangout, but don't overlook The Watertank right off of McNeil & 183. It's an old dive that's been many things over the years (a really bad Mexican restaurant in the early '80s, then a kicker bar, followed by a dart bar, now just a bar). Pretty laid back crowd, w/ a good mix of blue collar to high techies most days. Two Golden Tee machines ('02 and '03) & a shuffleboard that is so warped you wouldn't believe it, but it's free and worth it just to see the shots you can pull off.

Rhino's & Jocks isn't bad either, but it's hot as balls in that place for some reason. They do have some decent waitresses though, & plenty of screens for football season.
