Just had 2 of my cars towed - wtf

I think there are also laws on the max they can charge you to drop your car if you catch them in the process of towing.

And Whose - why didn't your buddy just call and put a stop payment on the check?

Cancelling the check would ahve probably resulted in a Mechanics lien and you could ahve repeated the whole process again.... but got to have some one drive you around to get a certified check ...

Seems in Austin it's $150 plus fees. The Link

BS. Cancel the check. I'm sure his boss would have been mildly interested in why the check was made out to the douchebag and not to the company.

THey don't take checks at the impound yard. Why would they? Everyone would cancel them.
And don't lump all wrecker drivers in with the impound wrecker drivers. Regular wreckers perform a valuable service, and properly haul cars to shops when they break down, or clear the roads after wrecks, an honest and needed service.
Only some of the companies do the impound business you are discussing on this thread. Fire away at them-they deserve it, although the businesses that want their lots kept clear are the reason behind this, in most cases.
The city in question also needs a good ordinance for wreckers that makes the tow-away areas extremely well marked, so that these thieves cannot pull shady deals on people without their knowledge.

My story:
Big 12 Championship Game in Dallas (yes, the one Simms ****** up). I park across the highway at an apartment complex - not sure why, but I had parked there a couple weeks early for a Cowboys' game with no problem. We come out of the game drunk as **** and really pissed off only to find my car gone. So we just go out the rest of the night and decide to get it later.

The next day we go get it and they charge me $100 extra for overnight storage. Then, the guy tells me the charge is $55 more than what the invoice says and I ask him about it. His response was to take the invoice and write "+$55" on it, and then he said, "There, it is authorized." So I end up paying the ****** over $300.

My friend's story (much much better for the good guys):
He is wasted one night downtown in Austin and had apparently parked in a bad spot. This tow truck driver was connecting the truck to my friend's car when my friend walks up. My friend starts yelling at the driver and they get in a fight. The driver got out of the car with a crow bar and is threatening my friend with it. My friend runs to the other side of the car and punches through the passenger window and cuts up his hand pretty bad.

Someone who saw the incident called the cops and when they arrive they put cuffs on my friend and called him an ambulance for his hand. After talking to the tow truck driver, they realize that he is really drunk as well. They took the cuffs off my friend and put them on the driver. The cops took them both to the jail. My friend was not arrested or charged with anything and was just taken in to give a statement while they stitched up his hand. The driver got a DWI.

Most of youy cats are going to hate this, but there is a time for fighting. The "time" is usually several days later, but your best option is to live, learn and then forget about it. In my opinion, those are clearly the only two options you have in this instance.

I think messing with the tow truck driver is about the dumbest thing you can do. I think they're all ex cons and are mean as a snake.

I agree to go after them later. I got towed once and the lady was the nastiest piece of human debris I've ever come across. Vowed to never let them get my money ever again.

I think Austin used to have a towing court just for this because these impounders were doing this with impunity. Check into that.

was towed 5 times when I lived in west campus..period of 3 years or so...i got my money back twice b/c they towed me from my own complex.

You can bet there is a deal with the Burger King employees. The Gattis on MLK watches for people who park there and then head to TC. You know the TC lot is so small and the Gattis lot is so big.

My friend was able to avoid getting towed when a tow truck had already hooked up his car by getting in the car and refusing to leave. I guess the driver couldn't tow with someone in the car because of liability issues.

There was a bit of a standoff where the tow truck driver wanted some $$$ to lower the car and even threatened to call the police, but ultimately he just lowered the car and drove off in search of easier prey.

yeah two times i have caught the guy lifting my car and just sat on the bumper and refused to move. I told him you can sit here with me or you can get the car next to me. It's your dime. Eventually they lower the car.

They can't touch you and clearly won't run over you. I can't stand those ********.

HHH and the shreded knee. I know you want hurt the guy or guy(s) in this racket, but that is a bad move. For all involved.

These types skirt the law to just be inside it, and you will go to jail. You're dealing with a mafia type problem here. They have power in this situation. Sad as it is.

Attack them with your brain. Perhaps we can start an anti-Impound PAC. That's what it takes. Not "shooting the leg".

Take their legal legs from them. Put caps on the fees. Stop the kickbacks. These people as we all know live in qausi-junkyards. They can be defeated. We just need to do it.

They hide behind the Shlotz. on the drag to watch the Veggie Heaven lot (or at least they used to). I saw a tow truck driver about to nab an old ladies car. I did not move from the driveway. I tied my shoes a few times, stretched, sat down, you name it. He was honking and yelling. I was flipping him off.

By this time several people were watching so his nudging up like he was going to run me over ceased as well. I invited him out of the truck as I moved towards the bricks lining the plants of the sandwich shop.

The lady walked back to her car and I ushered him to move on as she was leaving. He stopped and flipped me off. I blew him a kiss.

As I walked towards Veggie Heaven where I was going to have lunch, this man in a suit gave me his cookie he got for lunch and told me that was awesome. I assume he has been a victim of ******** too. Oh, the old lady walked into and out of the church. Maybe five minutes in all.

Fuckstick. But hey, I got to **** him over AND get a cookie. This was about five years ago. I don't like these bastard types described here but the ones that Accuratehorn mentions are legit and hardworking to provide a service. They get lumped in with the rest, sadly.

Every single post I have read with a story about the evil tow co's & drivers just makes me want to punch someone behind the wheel of a scum tow rig.

Of course I'm not talking about the good & needed guys Accurated references.

I lived in a condo complex where we had a bad circular diveway - if my unit, in the center of this C shaped drive - was to catch fire, & someone was parked in the curves, a fire engine would get stuck trying to navigate through.

We got tow signage, but the ******** wouldn't ever come out or even 1ce troll the place. I made a habit of leaving computer printed notes on windshields, knocking on doors, talking to residents, etc (I was on the board & this was the only thing I ever really did much care about... everything else was basically cool with me).

Why not get us some info on the tow co. & we can all do a coordinated complaint to the city or something like that - get their license revoked or suspended & they are out some serious money.

I got jammed up once 'cause I had to have proof that it was my truck. I don't recall the particulars, but basically I had to call for this mobile notary service to come & stamp me or they'd hit me for some ******** series of charges... I got the dude to notarize me with about 10 minutes to spare before midnight. It was the tow co. just S. of Ben White between 35 & Congress.

Of course, if it was even 2 seconds past midnight in Africa, this dude would charge me a few hundred bucks for all sorts of ******** fees.

If ANYONE deserves to DIAF, it's the ******** who break the law like this & put people @ serious loss for their vehicles.
