Very good pizza. Kicks Rounder's ***, and can be as good as Saccone's or Reale's. The two new contenders I've heard about are Mellow Mushroom and East Side Pies. So where are they? I'm too lazy to look it up.
Their pizza is my favorite in Austin, but the service has been absolutely awful the last 3 or 4 times I went. I have started going to Mellow Mushroom because of it.
So I finally got to go Friday and it was really good.
I still like Saccones the best, but this place is great. Plus I love the location and the fact I can run in to get a slice to go.
But I have to agree, the service was not the best. One guy there kept freaking out that we didn't look at the menu long enough, then yanked the menus away. Weird...but the pizza ruled.
That's strange... I've actually enjoyed the wait staff at Homeslice quite a bit every time I've been there (maybe 5-10 times). I don't recall having any bad experiences.
But yeah, one of my favorite pizza places in Austin.
After reading this thread, I tried it out last night. After an hour wait for the pizza to be made I found it fairly average. It seemed to me to be more of a 'hip' place to go than a place for really good pizza.
Went there during first thursday stuff. Pretty average, IMO. Overcooked and cardboardesque. Maybe I just caught them on a bad night - I'll give 'em another shot.
Best pizza in Austin IMO (although I havent been to Saccone's). Like you guys said, the service can be suspect, but this is Austin, service sucks everywhere. Mellow Mushroom is good as well, but try the calzone there. It is huge and delicious! That's what she said
I hate to sound like a pizza snob (OK, I really don't), but if you haven't tried Reale's or Saccone's pizza, then you should probably be careful about annointing any particular pie as "best in Austin". You might be right, but I wouldn't bet on it.
As for me, I will surely get around to all the options sooner or later. I haven't had Mellow Mushroom or East Side pizzas, but I can definitely say that (in my opinion) Home Slice and Rounders and The Onion fail to stack up favorably to Saccone's or Reale's (or even AlJohn's) if you're looking for an east coast pizza pie.
