Just curious re: opting out

I admit I haven’t taken the time to read the rules. I am wondering, if a player ops out, could he opt back in?

I think this year a player can opt out for covid without consequences. However, I don't remember if there was a deadline on that or if that was open for the entire season.

Yes, as long as they haven't signed with an agent or taken money they can opt back in. This year basically doesn't count. No redshirt rules apply either. Sam can come back if he wants. Doubtful but he could.

All he's doing is sitting out games. He hasn't signed with an agent. Hypothetically he could come back next week or a bowl game.

I saw Sam's tweet last week, and after thanking everyone, he basically said he wanted to finish his degree and my take was he's going to prepare for the NFL draft. Hope I'm wrong, but at this point I thinks he's gone.

Yeah, he can make a good living walking an NFL sideline with a clipboard. I mean, I don't watch the NFL anymore, and Sam is a great Longhorn with terrific heart, but has the NFL declined to a point that he would actually be a blessing to be the quarterback of an NFL team?

I'll get flamed even though I did not impugn Sam's character whatsoever above.

As to opting out, if the coaching staff WOULD take back a player who opted out, well, that goes to why Texas is in the craptastic shape it is in right now.

Edit: I think "blessing" above was a typo, but I can't recall what I was trying to actually say.

Good points HIC. I'm not sold on Sam as an NFL quarterback, but from what I've seen of his determination, I won't rule it out. He might be a fullback type to block on passing downs or short yardage situation. Maybe at some other position like a TE. Will he be drafted? Maybe, but I doubt he'll be a first rounder, and might be a UFA. Strange stuff happens on draft day. Then again, there is that one quality about Sam that sets him apart from the rest, he never quits.

The guys who opted out or quit wanting to transfer during the season, are quitters. I hope they find a new home, but many coaches I know, don't care for them either. Taking a player who quits on a team midseason, is prone to quit on another coach if things don't go their way. Just my 2 cents.
