Juno/Little Miss Sunshine

I watched both yesterday and enjoyed each of them quite a bit.

The softee in me certainly appreciated how heartwarming Juno was. Ellen Page fit the free spirit role and as noted on a previous thread, Jennifer Garner was a surprise hit as well. Good story, good film.

I was pretty impressed with LMS. Excellent writing imo and several knockout performances (Arkin & Collette esp.). Top notch casting...the chemistry was definitely there for all the scenes in the minibus or at the dinner table.

So which did you like better? It may not be the best comparison since I think each film brings something distinctly different to the table; but seeing as how each was a critical success and established itself as the Oscar underdog in back-to-back years, I figured I'd pose the question. Juno certainly wasn't a slouch, but I'd have to go with LMS, if only because it didn't feel quite as forced.

i liked both as well. i'd give the nod to little miss sunshine.

It's a default no contest since Juno sucked. But Little Miss Sunshine is fun. So the gap is even wider.

Interesting comparison question.

I also liked both movies. The flaws in Juno, to me, were that it was a little overwritten for the Juno character (a little too knowledgeable and witty) and some elements of the story were underdeveloped. The relationship with the guy who fathered the kid is something I would have liked to see developed a little more. OTH, very nice job with the parents and the Jennifer Garner characters.

Little Miss Sunshine hit more notes perfectly. The story of a group of disjoint people coming together is not new, but this treatment was very good. The characters were wacky but all grounded in real desires and dreams. I was moved more than once in the film. Steve Corell talking to the would-be pilot worked as did the shattered hopes of Greg Kinnear riding the absurd scooter across town.

In short, LMS will stick with me a long time, I'm not so sure that Juno will. That said, I'm delighted that Juno got made and succeeded.

There have been a very nice smattering of smaller movies over the last four or five years. Sideways, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Finding Neverland and the two movies discussed here.

I have not seen juno but unless it is the second coming of LMS than I am going to have to go with LMS. If you didn't leave the movie theatre smiling after that movie than you suck.

Juno was very good and entertaining. I didn't really think it was up there with the movies of the year though. My wife probably disagrees.

LMS was one of the best ensemble cast movies you will see. As mentioned the chemistry and comedic timing was outstanding. I really enjoy watching movies like this where the entire cast moves thru the movie together. It really was a journey.

That was never going to happen in Juno because the whole thing was a vehicle for Cody's ego, embodied in Juno, to be showcased. Juno had to be the biggest thing in that movie, regardless of anything that would help the movie, such as those 2 criticisms. And that's just the starting point for the suckage that is that movie.

That said, I will pay money to go see an independent attempt at movie making that the crap, remakes and sequels that Hollywood seems to think is art. Of course, none of that matters anymore now that Marvel is making it's own movies.

LMS was great, mostly because of Alan Arkin's performance. It was really so effortless. A testament to his acting chops, as you totally buy into the character. I was so pleased he won the Oscart for it.

The pep talk scene in the hotel room with the little girl was fantastically acted and written.

I'll give the nod to LMS.....I'm no prude, but I thought the language in LMS was little harsh at times (for no reason).

I really enjoyed them both, but wouldn't put either on my favorites short list.

One thing that the films have in common is excellent young actresses that are going to be around for a while.

I haven't seen Juno yet (although I bought the DVD/CD on the street here in Buenos Aires before the DVD was even released in the USA ), but I loved me some Little Miss Sunshine. As stated above, Alan Arkin was ******* GENIUS!!

I've yet to see Juno, but LMS was outstanding. I love Greg Kinnear, anyway, and I grew up loving Alan Arkin. So this movie really satisfied me.

Juno >>>>> Little Miss Sunshine

Juno = after leaving the theater, I went straight home to pre-order the DVD, and I don't buy many DVD's anymore.

Little Miss Sunshine = after leaving the theater, I went straight to the manager to ask for my money back - and I got it, too. He said there had been two other people that asked the same thing. Unfortunately he could not give me the previous 2 hours of my life back. I have never walked out in the middle of a movie, but I almost did this time.

isnt this kind of like eating an entire steak in a restaurant and then returning the empty plate to the manager and telling him it was overcooked and you want a refund?
