junior video of austin seferian-jenkins.

countdown for sooner pretending to be a longhorn who doesn't see any value in him starts NOW: one thousand, two thousand, . . .

very interesting discussion in that thread. gobr and coach etch are worth paying attention to, and they both seem very impressed.

there are questions, of course. nearly all should be answered quickly at the june camp, i am sure. he catches very well, but his qb doesn't really zing the ball. need to see his sense of timing and reflexes when the ball is a hot potato. but he apparently has large, soft hands and great eye/hand coordination. also need to see his speed on the field with some of the best hs'ers the state of texas and around can present.

i really like the comments of coach etch and gobr. as-j looks pretty amazing to me. i always love it when a kid has highlight plays on offense, defense, and special teams. i still have in my mind the kickoff when cedric griffin was past the blockers so fast they didn't react to him. looked like they thought he was on their side. : )

the several fg or ep kicks that as-j blocks are beautiful. i also loved that he had the presence of mind and ability to catch up to and strip the interceptor of a pass and recover the fumble himself.

kid looked like paul bunyan out there. i hope our staff is similarly impressed.

i'm taking a chance here. i don't like to view the footage of our prospects until and unless they commit to us. i first watched him thinking he wasn't really a possibility. now i'm hooked. gotta have him in the right shade of orange. : )

I wonder if that first team he is playing against with the "O" on their helmets is Olympia. My nephew plays for them and I think he's a safety.

good chance of it, alex. gh played them. only 'o' team on the sched. gh is just north of the famous tacoma narrows bridge, which puts it not far at all from olympia. do you know his number?

He looks like he has great hands but I am not sure the speed is there. He looks so large and the kids that are covering him seem intimidated by his size. Speed isn't everything but I guess if he does make if for a camp this summer several of the questions I have will be answered.

3d, there was an interesting exchange about speed/explosion between gobr and coach etch where it was suggested that the qb's lack of arm strength probably limits how hard he can run prior to the throw. that said, raw speed in a tight end is less important than good hands, good reading/decision-making and the ability to get open.

david thomas, for example, never was a blazer. didn't need to be.

Glenn I would love to have Mr. Jenkins come to UT. I think you need depth at TE especially since it is a position that injuries can happen. Plus if you are good youii will probably get pleanty of PT even if you don't start.

Dear Texas,

I am a junior in high school and am getting bored playing guys that are only human. I am huge, talented, instinctive, and love your university. You should recruit me because I kick *** and because my middle name IS Austin. Kidding, kidding. Austin is my FIRST name.

Hookem,
#80

PS Did you like the kicks I blocked?

dear fourscore,

we especially liked how MANY kicks you blocked and the hot potato you handled with the entire kicking team in your face. they obviously targeted you as a big, ole clumsy dufous and you stuffed it right down their throats.

you rock, buddy. see you in a coupla weeks.

love,
ut

i guess the word is that not only is austin coming to camp in austin in a few weeks, but his mom is coming as well. they will be here all day saturday to check out the campus and academic matters. i bet we have something nice lined up for sat eve.

i don't want to get too overextended on this, but we all know that is a very, very nice thing to hear.

Good information Glenn. The fact that his mother is coming is a good sign.

indeed it is, bill. at this point just a good sign, but a very good one.

as-j is coming in on the 11th for the june 13 camp.

another item of note. bruce chambers went up to visit one day this week, and one of the things he did was time austin in the 40. austin's coach has said he times pretty consistently in the 4.7s, but that doesn't quite jive with what chambers apparently came back with.

bruce says he came in at 4.65. : )

With what I saw in that Video, if he can stay under 280 and maintain a 4.8 forty speed, he will be a 1st round NFL draft pick. The kid can maul people as a blocker and has some pretty soft hands.

agree, wasatch. i'm sure you read the quotes above. to think that he caught every pass at that camp that got close to him and that he never even bobbled one is pretty amazing. certainly that video bears that out, as you say. i read somewhere that he has huge hands. he makes them look like they're made of glue. or huge pigskin magnets.

just as important, i think, is the dominant blocking that you point out. we all know how crucial david thomas was to our title run. his catches made all the difference. but he was a terrific blocker as well, and i think that had an awful lot to do with our success that season. that dude was nails on darn near every play. austin, if he comes our way, and mj mcfarland have the potential to be the secret ingredient in this class, in my humble.

glenn - thx for the vid. after watching it all I can say is.......damn! great size, good hands, great jumping ability esp for a kid that size, above-avg speed again for his size (got behind db's alot), good downfield blocking (saw more than one pancake; imagine that from our te), and most impressive: his yac. a real fighter who goes down slow.

not to mention his de and special teams abilities.

very impressive.

yes, meso. it was those special teams plays that knocked me out. i mean, the guy is a secret weapon.

i loved the one where the kickoff was aimed at him with the whole squad concentrated to run right at him. i can envision the other coaches thinking they knew just the way to take him out of a game mentally. blow his mind with a play like that where the prospect of 11 young men running right at him will make him flub the catch and, not only do they get the ball back, but he'll have that bugging him the rest of the game. bet they didn't try that again.

i love it when special teams plays and broken plays make it into a kid's highlights. my fondness for applewhite began with the recruits in review tape that covered his recruiting class, because there several plays that blew up in their faces but major had the presence of mind to make something happen anyway.

back to austin, the kid not the town, i also liked the way he made defenses work to get him down. that wears those guys out. and demoralizes them.

great looking kid.

edit:
you mentioned defensive end play. i particularly liked the play where the qb put a nifty move on him to make him miss. it took an athletic move on austin's part to keep him from getting away. i bet he can play there at the next level.

you probably know, but they used earl campbell at linebacker at a few special moments. he was unreal there.

Glenn I remember when Earl blocked a field goal against Arkansas when he was a freshman and ran it all the way back for a td and broke open a tight game.

The good thing about getting another TE is the depth because it is a position where injuries can happen more than most. Plus if you are good Coach Mack is good at giving players PT and this keeps fresh and rested players in the game. I hope we get him. McFarland and he can have great careers here.

i have a memory of an extremely remarkable play, and i'm sure that was it. young people today don't realize what a struggle we had playing arkansas most years.

i wish they would address injury to tight ends like irby's. especially the smaller defensive backs feel like the only way they can bring down a tight end is by hitting him below the knees. when they aim AT the knees, though, they need to suffer a nasty penalty.

yes, i like the thought of as-j and mj hounding defenses. those two dudes, when they hit stride, will change how defenses play us, i bet. they'll have to account for both of them on every play, and at least one of them will move around.

Um... YEAH!!! This kid definitely needs to have the welcome mat laid out to him. His size and hands alone make him a viable recruit for us. He does look like he plays with less than his best effort but mostly it seems because he clearly stands out as a man amongst boys on the field. Even next to the refs, its clear to see that he looks up to no one.

With a damn good QB throwing to him, he'll need to run sharper routes and pick up the pace. This kid could be huge or a huge bust, with either the right or wrong coaching. I'd put my $$ on him becoming huge at UT under the supervision and coaching of our staff.

Come on down to the 40 acres Austin. We'd love to have you here and see you pimped out in burnt orange.

hous, ghost of big roy over on bon makes a sensible observation about that. realize that the qb doesn't have a lot of arm strength and austin could pretty easily run himself out of range. when he gets the ball he really turns up the heat.

good point about the coaching he will get here if he comes. we have several tight ends bouncing around the league and if david thomas ever gets away from the injury bug, i think he and jermichael will blow people away. i think bo would be right there, too, if his leg injuries, starting with the one in hs, hadn't taken such a toll on him. he's certainly doing plenty as he is.
