Apparently he was granted his release in April, but waited to see if things were going to change before deciding to transfer. It didn't, so he did.

I thought the Lanier rehire would turn out to be a great move. Guess all it did was alienate the posers that Barnes/Ogden were responsible for recruiting.

I think we should easily expect another sub-.500 season or two before this **** gets turned around. Barnes won't last unless the 4-headed guard we brought in for the next recruiting class somehow manages to come together and Ridley learns how to play basketball.

Barnes may need walk ons to fill out the roster.

Which is in worse shape; Augie's baseball program or Barnes' bball team?

I think these guys get tired of the infamous "Barnes' Doghouse." I personally don't care about any of those guys transferring. Bond couldn't stay healthy, and when he did, he didn't do much of anything. Sheldon and Julien were the most inconsistent players I can recall in recent memory. To the other comment re basketball and baseball, our athletic department is choosing to be reactive, rather than proactive, and will wait for things to get so bad, that they probably miss opportunities for the best potential coach and turn away recruits. Especially for basketball, there are definite red flags for recruits. If the lack of offensive organization and schemes, and lack of development of players wasn't enough, now that guys are bailing and we are looking at another losing season, people won't be motivated to come here.

How are all these transfers etc not a reflection on the coaching staff. One expert commentator said it (losing 5 of the 6 recruits of 2011) was just a case of bad recruiting.....!!!!!!!!

Haven't seen this type of mass exodus since Kaiser Bob Weltlich came to Texas. That was the beginning of an error - this may be the end of an era.

Basketball is in worse shape because there may be more to leave with many rumors about Ridley not happy and maybe having health issues too.

Baseball still has a very good pitching staff and will next season. This basketball team really has no strong points I can see and getting worse with each transfer.

What ever happened to that H-Town guy that was telling us how good things are?

Which is worse reflection on the state of our program - half the guys leaving, or most of us feeling we aren't going to miss them that much anyway?

2014 is the year to look forward to. I believe Deloss' contract is up...he's gone...and so is Rick... and his doghouse.

If you can't shoot you shouldn't be playing for major college basketball. The guys that left cound't shoot consistently like the good teams in the very recent past.(last 10 or so years)

Lewis is an idiot for leaving as he would have run the team. He could at least shoot sometimes.

Defense wins but you still have to score. Hopefully a couple or three of the new recruits can light it up.

BTW, basketball is the easiest to turn around in one or two years.

I think Lewis could be a really good player, if he made the commitment to being the best that he can be at both ends.

But therein possibly lies the problem. Barnes hasn't shown that he can get the best out of his players. The ones that do their best seem to be self motivators that get the best out of themselves.

I think Barnes got the best out of a lot of guys from 1999-2008. Royal Ivey comes to mind.

But college basketball... the times they are a changin'. AAU has devolved into a chaotic mess that sells their top talent to the NCAA, and that top talent sucks at fundamentals, defense, leadership, etc. That's a recipe for disaster for a team like Texas, because we don't have the storied history to get the top AAU talent (if you could even call it that) that would go to places like Duke and Kentucky. We have to get the leftovers, and the leftovers of today aren't the leftovers of 2001.

Our leftovers are the guy who had to skip his senior season of HS because he was too old for the state rules, or the guy who got kicked off of two HS teams before settling on just "not playing" before coming to Texas, or the guy who was too lazy to compete for a point guard spot. This isn't exactly a recipe for leadership, work ethic, and fundamentals.

I think Royal Ivey is an exception...I can't think of a list of others whom he developed/improved. Perhaps Paulino's senior year could be one. Really struggling to think of any others.
