Chalk this one up for Coach Harsin. I like how we are going after juco players for immediate impact especially at TE.

Adios, RSJ.

It's nice to know that we're willing to pull the trigger on guys who can help us immediately instead of waiting for the other foot to fall... or the other "5 star Rivals/Scout list guy" to fall.

We made some huge recruiting mistakes in the post-Perriloux, post-Brantley debacles. Trying to fill gaps with guys who just weren't meant to play at Texas. From the looks of this kid, he's very intelligent and can help right away.

This is why:

"The one thing that stood out to them in watching my film from other tight ends is that my film was primarily all blocking," he said. "They said they wanted a guy that could help them get back to running power football. I can come in January and make an impact. I am that physical, hard-nosed guy that can block the end.

I heard on the radio he was a polished blocking TE. My question is just what kind of threat will he beat in the passing game. Mack has specifically said that they are trying to become more versatile vs. what they were the last couple of seasons when they ran out an OT at TE and the defense knew a run was coming. Just asking the Q b/c that is a very low # of catches for a TE prospect.

Several great things about this one:
1) He is a mid-termer. He will be polished in the offense by fall 2013.
2) He already plays in a very similar system
3) He knows exactly how we intend to use him, and he is excited about it. No hesitation or negotiation and I doubt no shopping around.
4) He will play a role to have a more successful power run game which will open up our passing game.

Longtex, I wondered the same thing. He must have really made an impression on Harsin and Chambers to get an offer as a JUCO without playing his 2nd JUCO season.

Here is another article about Swaim from a local paper:

TE Swaim

I could not find much else on Swaim.

Yeah, I got the first-year part - but wasn't the Natty Champ QB from Miss also a freshman? I thought I read that somewhere, but perhaps not. I don't see any difference between a guy who goes from a Div 2 4-year school and xfers to FBS after one year and the same thing for a JuCo... so what's the wait? Unless, of course, there is some arcane rule - which certainly wouldn't surprise anyone...

Don't quote me on this but if my memory serves me, a JUCO that does not stay 2 years has to sit out a year whereas a JUCO that completes his JUCO or Community college degree plan can transfer and play immediately.

If this is correct, it is probably to prevent schools from sending their "oversigned" players to a JUCO and getting them back after one season.

Swaim is expected to graduate from his JUCO/CC in December.

Sorry - no time right now to dig out the JUCO transfer rule but you can find it if you Google 2012 NCAA Manual

Short answer on the juco admission. It is up to the university's individual academic requirements on juco transfers. If his academic standing and courses meet all the admission requirements, he can come in next semester technically. UT requires juco transfer to have an AA degree and a 3.0 gpa. At least that is what I had to have to transfer from MCC/Waco in 93. But I was not an athletic grant in aid candidate, so it may differ for them hopefully so, as a 3.0 gpa is too strict in my opinion. Baylor U. for example routinely takes juco's after completing one year and then have 3 years left to play. Their gpa transfer requirement is also only 2.0.

That is correct Longtex on the butt bare min. of 2.0 for ncaa rules. That is why BU is able to do that. Now again, UT may supercede the butt bare min. and require a higher GPA than the ncaa, I know they did in the past. Maybe Mack got them to pare it down to match other schools. I am pretty sure the AA grad requirement is still there for the academic juco transfers to UT, but does not apply to athletic transfers.
