I keep reading that he is only the second player we have ever signed out of ohio. Who was the first? Initially I thought it was carter hill but I think he was from illinois.

A.J. Jones was the first Ohio blue chip we signed, if you are too young to remember him, or did not read your History of Longhorn football, you should be punished.

He was the next blue chip RB recruit Fred signed after Earl graduated.

Holy crap I can't believe I forgot jam. I should be flogged! He was one of my favorite players. That was one helluva recruiting class that included among others; donnie little

There were 2 Johnny Jones's. Johnny HAM Jones came in 1975 from Hamlin and Johnny LAM Jones came in 1976 from Lampassas. They were given the nicknames to separate them as both were running backs (until Fred Akers moved LAM to wide receiver in 1977) and many times in the same backfield,

A. J. Jones came from Youngstown, Ohio in 1978 ans was the #1 running back in the country that year. He was nicknamed JAM and was a teammate of both HAM and LAM in 1978,

I don't think Lam Jones was a freshman in 2006. If so, judging from his birthdate, he would rival Ron McKelvey as oldest freshman ever. Also, why would coaches need to keep from gteting confused with a recruit who came to UT 31 years earlier? The bigger concern would be with confusion between Lam and Eddie Jones, who is not from Lampasas.
