After the Kstate loss he was the guy I mentioned as needing more playing time. He is the biggest guard we have on the wing and we need size out there. Hopefully they can find ways to get him inside a bit to help there as well.
He shoots very well and provides outside scoring which we haven't been getting in this rough stretch.
He made one shot falling down. I think he just tossed it up because he would have been called for traveling. It went it. Everything went in. That was fun to watch, a big win in a place very hard to come away with a victory.
I have been a big proponent of getting this guy more time all year. The 3 is such a powerful shot in college. It can get a crowd going, it can quiet a crowd, it can get a team on a run, it can stop your opponent from making a big run. But it can also get you in trouble if it is not falling.
It was clear in the AAS article this AM that Barnes has been preaching to Jordan to "take good shots." If he plays within the offense, he will get good shots and he can really be a difference maker. I think it makes a big difference to have J'Covan at the point, because he is a threat to score as well, so it takes attention away from Jordan.
We have A LOT of weapons, we just need to use them the right way.
Check my record and I've been consistent on this point. The guy simply needs to be on the court most of the time. Even after the Baylor game (when he looked horrible for the 2 minutes that he was in), I suggested that he should start and bring Mason off the bench.
Hamilton's biggest "problem" is that he can get a shot off any time he wants (and usually does). But in the Barnes "offense", you have to have guys that can create shots for themselves. Hello?!?!?! That's Hamilton.
I'm hoping that last night made it too painfully obvious for Barnes to ignore. We simply must have Hamilton (or Brown) out there at all times to create more room for Dex, James, and Johnson inside.
You guys are such a different team when there is some production from the outside. Good luck the rest of the year, especially on Saturday and next Monday.
Part of it also is I have just trained myself to accept that he will shoot a 3 5 feet back off the first pass every game. Once I got over that I could enjoy watching him play.
Balbay and Mason should never be on the court at the same time. While they each have their strengths, you just can't afford to have 2 non-shooting threats on the perimeter.
I disagree about Balbay and Mason being on the court. They are easily our best defenders.
Dogus frustrated the hell out of Paige last night. He had 0 points, and that kid usually goes nuts from beyond the arch.
Same with Mase, he came in a helped shut down Anderson in the 2nd half...
I know they dont necessarily produce a lot of points.. but you need guys like that to get turnovers and get under the skin of opponents.
On Hamilton - He was still putting up bad shots.. but they were falling. Everything was. At that point, I stopped caring about what shot he was putting up and just wanted him shooting every time. It was awesome.
He cant shoot like that every week, so lets hope he continues to play smart and gets this team rolling heading into the meat of conference play.
Well, for me, I knew he was a SCORER after I saw him take his first 3 pointer.
I realize that he takes some bad shots and needs to a better understanding/feel of when he needs to take his shots, particularly relative to the time of possession. But, I like his ability to create offense. That base-line J near the end of the first half was Kobe-like.
As for Balbay and Mason, they each have their strengths (and weaknesses). The main point is: the offense is handicapped when they are out there at the same time.
I actually want Balbay running the point the majority of the time. He just needs to be flanked by shooters (Brown, Hamilton, and/or Bradley). When Mason comes in, then Balbay needs to rotate out, so we still got the requisite number of outside weapons.
I'm sure the reason he sat for Baylor was for lesson learning...primarily on taking foolish shots. The ones last night seemed to be open and when they go in very hard to complain. Have a feeling he was proving lessons learned.
