Jon Lester . . . thru 7 IP

18th no-hitter in BoSox history. Cue all the Lymphoma-to-No-hitter feel-good pieces.

edit: I originally heard this was the 20th.

I went to a benefit last year for Huntington's Disease and one of the items up for the silent auction was 5 autographed baseballs from the "future stars" of the Red Sox. Clay Buchholz, Jacob Ellsbury, Jon Lester and 2 guys I can't remember. (maybe Pedroia & Jed Lowrie) I think it ended up going for $60 and I remember at the time thinking if Lester comes back from Lymphoma that one alone might be worth $60. I also thought bottled water couldn't make money and that Starbuck's were a fad that would fade away.

Great guy and to go through all he has so far in his life. This one's for you. Congratulations.

I watched the post-game show on NESN, and hearing Varitek and Francona talk about Lester and how happy they are for him damn near made me cry.

A couple of great nuggets from the post-game show:

1. Dennis Eckersley is the other studio guy. Eck pitched a no-no in 1978 (?). They asked him how it feels and he babbled excitedly a bunch then said, "The next four days will be four of the greatest days of Lester's life. He's going to wake up tomorrow and realize that he pitched a no-hitter, which puts him in a category with guys like Nolan Ryan and Sandy Koufax, and he's going to carry that feeling until his next start."

2. Varitek said he didn't know that Lester hadn't allowed a hit until after the top of the seventh inning. He said he came in the dugout after the seventh knowing that Lester's pitch count was over 100 and expected Lester's night to be over. He said he looked into the bullpen and saw no one warming up. He said he was confused for a couple of seconds, then he finally looked at the scoreboard.

he should have checked hornfans on his blackberry. this thread would have clued him in. also, how did he manage to get the last 6 outs with this thread floating around cyberspace? that's impressive.
