Johnny Manziel

Anybody got a clue why UT didn't try to recruit this guy?

He was the most dynamic HS player to come out of the Greater San Antonio area since Warren McVea in the early 60s. When Tivy played Cibolo Steele (the eventual 5A Div II state champ starring Malcolm Brown), Manziel was 32 of 40 for 400+ and 6 TDs. He ran for over a hundred and 2 more TDs.

Now, four months out of HS, he was 8/9 for 115 and 2 TD in the aggy spring game on Sat. and drew rave reviews.

My heart sank when I heard that he'd changed his commitment from Oregon to aggy. God knows we needed a QB that could come in and make an impact. Were we really that sold on David Ash as our QB?

maybe because he committed to Oregon early on.

It is interesting though. U of Oregon and Aggy could not be more different in terms of weather, student life, offensive style. etc.

Thought just occurred to me. Would admitting the girlfriend to UT be a recruiting violation? I have no idea who she is or anything AT ALL about her. She might be valedictorian for all I know, but 92% of the kids at her school would most likely not get admitted.

Yes, we were "really sold on Davis Ash". Ash is a tremendous recruit and is getting rave reviews from our coaches. Him, coupled with Brewer, make our young QB's very solid. Yes. I know what Darrell said about "potential".

his size kept him from being on everyone's list. i've met him before and he's definitely not 6 feet tall...so that limits the number of schools that were going to look at him as a true QB.

both A&M and oregon recruited him as an athlete, but i think A&M is going to give him a long look at QB. based on his spring game performance, i think he'll stick there.

Mack can't chase every QB that has a great day, or even a great year.

Maybe "he who should not be mentioned ever again" convinced the other coaches to overlook Manziel or that he did not fit the direction we wanted to go. Who knows.

I know Manziel excelled against lots of different teams and competition levels, so I can't believe he won't do well at aggy if he stays healthy.

Not someone we would want at Texas & it has nothing to do with ability on the field. Talk to people in the know in Kerrville or opposing coaches. You'll have your answer.

Hummm.....

That's pretty intriguing Jasmine. But, I don't know anybody in Kerrville. Come on, spill the beans.

Horizontally?

11,

I didn't think of it that way, but your view was pretty well supported the last many years!
Bring on the new system!!!!

I guess this is what I get for putting too much into what is listed on recruiting sites. I assume the school, or the player just tells someone like Rivals how tall, fast, etc. they are and they publish it?

On another note, I have read multiple accounts that claim Manziel grew up a Longhorn fan and wanted to come to Texas, but we only offered as a WR.

Everything I have read from other players (including our own Malcolm Brown) and opposing coaches say he is a great kid. Coming on here and bashing him without something to back it up is not cool.

I never saw Manziel play. He may be a great one.

But I did see Ash play against Abilene High down in San Antonio in game 1. High was rated #1 nationally at the time, and Abilene did win the game, but the loss was not for a lack of effort on the part of Ash.

Ash was slinging zingers all over the field, and his club actually took the lead in the second half over the highly favored Abilene team. And I'm not just talking about short routes where the WR broke away. I'm talking about 35 yard frozen ropes into the hands of the receiver. Ash can flat-out play.

I remember thinking that Ash was a guy Texas was recruiting but I wasn't for sure. As I watched Ash play, and as I saw his bullet passes gashing Abilene's defense time and again, I sure hoped Ash was the QB Texas was looking at.

Nothing against Manziel, but Ash sure seems Texas-good to me, FWIW.
