Wayne's best friend was Ward Bond and his 2nd best was probably Victor McLaglen. I think it is a big, big stretch to call Richard Boone as that close a friend. I doubt he even met him until 1960's The Alamo and Wayne was 10 years older than him. Ford and Wayne had a great working relationship, but they also weren't that close off camera.

Besides Bond Ford was Wayne's best friend, Wayne spent a lot of time on Ford's boat, as a matter of fact I think Ford left Wayne the Yacht. Boone and Wayne for friends for 40 years, they made two or three movies together which explains Boone being in the Shootist Wayne's last movie.
