John Fogerty

So I managed to squirrel away a little "personal time" today, and headed for my studio. While I was setting some things up, I flipped on an HD music network, and it was right in the middle of a John Fogerty concert broadcast.

Now, I know all about John Fogerty, and I respect John Fogerty. The guy has written some classic tunes over a period of decades, and he's truly "one of a kind". Good, distinctive singer, good guitar player, great songwriter.

That doesn't even BEGIN to describe John Fogerty. This concert is unreal. First of all, his band is smokin' tight. Second, his singing is spot on. Third, the classics just keep COMING. One after another.

Fourth, he is an absolutely SPECTACULAR guitar player. At one point, I looked up and saw a guy playing an Ernie Ball "Van Halen Tele", and just rippin' on a very "Eruption-esque" pseudo-classical solo. Tapping, descending harmonic structure, it was all Eddie Van Halen. Just as good. Damn, they broke away from Fogerty and are showing a clip from the latest VH tour. OK, I can deal with it.

No, it was Fogerty.

This guy is scary. I actually think "genius" is a fair descriptor. Amazing.

Cosmo's Factory remains to this day one of my all time favorite albums. There's a complex simplicity to the artistry.

jimmyjazz, as a studio guy, you should check out his Blue Ridge Rangers solo record.

If I recall correctly he performed every part and every vocal on the record himself. It's tight, it's soulful, it's a great record.

He has a reputation for being a perfectionist in the studio, and he's probably pretty hard on his touring band, too. As you know, brilliant performances generally don't happen by accident.

Do you know if there will be a re-broadcast of the show you saw?

Thanks for the tip on the Blue Ridge Rangers. I hadn't heard of that one.

I don't know if it will be rebroadcast, either. I'll program our DVR and let you know if it shows up.

I know some folks who went to a private party where he was the headline entertainment for the evening. He was paid to play an hour set, but decided he was having too much fun so he played an extra hour and a half. The reports I got back were very similar: damn good show.

OK, I dug around on the MHD website, and found the following:

John Fogerty "Long Road Home":

Monday 4/21/08 9 AM

I didn't notice any more broadcasts in the next week, but fortunately for us, Train, Daughtry, and Maroon 5 are getting plenty of air time

I don't think it was Aronoff playing with him on this show, which was taped in 2005. I think I would have picked up on that -- Aronoff is easily my favorite rock drummer -- and I don't recall a bald head behind the kit. Still, the guy was good.

Aronoff is with Fogerty now. I recently saw him at the Houston Rodeo in Reliant stadium. I've been to a lot of concerts at the rodeo, but his show is by far the best show of any of them. Not only did Fogerty's voice sound great for a 60 yo, but his band was superb. You could tell they've been playing together for a long time.

I also read something recently regarding Fogerty's quest for perfection. Aronoff mentioned that during one concert date, they rehearsed for 6 hours before a 2 hour show.
