Jeter sucks

I read this article hurriedly, but I did not see number of errors or fielding percentage mentioned. I did see some scientific jargon that matters not in the won/loss column.

Jeter is a "winner"; on and off the field he sets an outstanding example, especially for our youth. The same can't be said for some mentioned in this article. He is a team leader and as Augie would say "plays the game like it is supposed to be played."

Bottom line, 95% of MLB teams would like to pencil him in at SS.

Heah Beau, from reading your posts before I kind of liked you.
You're not a Red Sox fan are you?

Jeter would have won my undying respect, and made his team better in the process, if he'd have stepped aside and let the best player in MLB, and a FAR superior shortstop, actually PLAY shortstop. Jeter has a good glove and a good arm, but very average range - he'd have made a very solid 3b. But, alas, he retained his douche status when he held out for his position, and hampered his team.

Jeter was the 5th highest rated shortstop in MLB for 2008 behind (Rollins, Young, Tejada, Itzuri) This includes fielding percentage, zone rating, and range factor.

Source espn.go.com./mlb/statistics. Sorry. I am not sure how to post the link.

Many fans would find the ESPN stats credible.

Fielding percentage is absolute garbage.

Zone rating takes into account the number of plays made, but not the number chances you had to make those plays. A bad SS playing behind a ground-ball pitching staff will have a higher ZR than a good SS playing behind a K-flyout pitching staff.

ZR is the best idea of the three, but can fluctuate pretty dramatically from year to year. Check this out. Not too good in 2006 either.

In '06 and '07, maybe one or both years, I recall him playing with injuries. Regardless, whether that is a factor, you will note that his errors were less than most rated above him those years.

In closing arguments. and my final statement to the jury, he may not be the best defensive shortstop in MLB, but he is innocent of the charge that he is the worst, as charged by the Post article. And whether or not he "sucks", can be a personal opinion

Pay Rod should definitely be the SS whether Jeter moved to 3B or 2B. Very selfish, imo.

I also wonder if he had moved whether this olive branch would have taken some of the pressure off Pay Rod. We'll never know.

Don't mention Biggio on this board. Some will say he and Bagwell are better than MickeyMantle and Lou Gehrig.

In addition to having zero errors in CF the 37 year old craig biggio I believed led the league in OF assists. I demand a recount in the gold glove balloting!

Seriously though, I love bidge and he was awful as a CF. I think he was so high in OF assists b/c he threw guys out at second base trying to go home to second on routine singles up the middle. Or how about the time that he was playing LF and a guy tagged up and went from 2nd to 3rd on him on a ball 10 feet short of the warning track.

I saw some things that I've never seen before and will probably never again with Bidge in the OF.

Of course, he did make the astros defensive play of the year climbing a wall and bringing back a HR ball in pittsburg, it was awesome.

But he was a bad, bad, bad, bad, bad OF.

It's basically a defensive VORP that they're calculating.

How many fewer plays did the guy make than the average player would have made? Since Manny only played LF, you can only compare him to the average LFer. Since Jeter only played SS, you can only compare him to the average SS. Jeter was apparently the most "below average" of any player at any position in MLB.

Like you said, it's not that hard to figure out.

That's because you're not thinking about it properly. Manny sucks in left field, no doubt. But there aren't any awesome fielders playing left field, that's why they play left field.

Meanwhile, Jeter's competition is other shortstops, and as you can imagine there are several excellent fielders at that position. That's why they play shortstop.

And that's why Jeter is worse relative to the average shortstop than Manny is relative to the average left fielder
.

Manny has made 65 errors in his career and has a career fielding percentage of .978.

Jeter has made 205 errors in his career and has a career fielding percentage of only .975.

Clearly, Manny is a better defensive player than Jeter.

Sincerely,
The Gold Glove Voters
