jet blue and ft. lauderdale

Heres the deal. At a golf tournament my mulligan ticket was drawn and I won two tickets from jet blue airlines anywhere they fly. Wife and I decided, more her than me, Ft Lauderdale, renting a car and hading to the keys. I am mid 30's, she is thirty.(Miami club scene 4 nights in a row is not an option) What woud be our best option. Planning 4 nights. Spending a day in Ft lauderdale, 3 on the keys. Miami and the keys, or just drive straight to the keys. Could also make it a 5 night stay. Rather not though. Wife has her own company, I know the 5th day will be spent with her mostly on the phone checking things at work. The four nights or 5 are our time. I will give my self a day at the end to travel to back to fort laudy. Also need recommendations as where to stay while at the keys, restaurants, things to do. She loves fishing by the way and of course shopping. Thanks in advance for the help.

I'll Email this topic to my brother; he will probably reply to me via Email for repost.

He is probably under water in the Keys about 2x a month & is in the Lauderdale area.

Questions for you, first:

Do you or the wife want to:

--Dive or snorkel?
--Salt water fish?
-----Open / Big water or shallows / flats (i.e. fly)?
--Lounge & get quiet without being bugged?
--Night life & friendly bars?

One thing I suggest as a day trip (have done it myself) is to visit The Link - you can take a "Fast Cat" high speed Catamaran ferry or spend bigger bucks (but get there faster, spend more time, get back faster) & fly in on a sea plane. It's a solid one day event & I highly reccomend it, especially if you're a history buff (can you say "My Name Is Mudd..."?

IMO, I'd skip Fort Lauderdale & go directly to the Keys. Split your time like this:
* one day about the middle Keys,
* two days in Key West (one whole day in Key West, then a 2nd whole day - or most of it - in the Dry Tortugas)
* then another day in the upper to middle Keys so that you don't have as long a drive on day 4 when you go back.

The middle Keys will be much more relaxed, less people & a good "get away from everyone" thing. Diving & snorkeling is good out of John Pennekamp State Park; these are, IMO, just as good as any of the other dive trips. I'd hunt for the Molasses Reef trip or the Christ of the Abyss statue (famous underwater Jesus statue).
