In an article in the new issue of the Alcalde, Coach Elliot describes the 2011 recruiting class:

"Next year's class is going to be very, very special. We should be in a position to be a Final Four team for the next four or five years".

Who are these wonder girls of 2011?

Here is some info on the 2011 recruits:

Katherine Bell 6'2 OH/MB Mesquite, TX - ranked #2
Haley Eckerman 6'3 OH/MB Waterloo, IA - ranked #5
Madelyn Hutson 6'5 MB Brentwood, TN - ranked #13
(national rankings based on PrepVolleyball.com)

All these girls have experience with USA volleyball and were selected for the 2009 USA Youth National Team along with Hannah Allison (Sarah Palmer and 2012 recruit Amy Neal trained with them on the Youth National Training team prior to the final roster selection).

These players are known to be very athletic and can play any position in the front row. Bell and Eckerman will most likely develop into 6 rotation pin hitters, while Hutson should make her presence known in the middle. Reports say that Hutson will graduate early and train with the team in the spring and Bell will continue playing with her club team in the spring. I haven't heard anything with Eckerman coming early.

Here are articles on the the recruits' high school play-offs.

i think both bell and eckerman have been ranked as the #1 recruit in the 2011 class at one point or another. of course i'm not sure if there's more than one ranking service, or if they update the lists from time to time? i do know from reading a few message boards last year that both are considered big time players and two of the best (if not the two best) out there. not to take anything away from hutson though...she's obviously highly ranked also.

If you do a search by her high school, Ravenwood, you can watch her in action. You can easily point her out being 6'5"/6'6".

Nice spike at :43 seconds!!

Haven't tried hard enough to find clips on C. Bell.

With Molly McCage and Chloe Collins already committing as well for '12/'13 I believe, we are bound to make some noise nationally!!

I'm worried about the 2012 season. Hannah Allison will be the lone setter on the squad since Michelle Kocher will have graduated and Chloe Collins doesn't come in until 2013. And if this year is any indication, depth at every position is essential because injuries can/do happen.

I believe Sarah Palmer has the ability to set, but she will be the Libero. I wonder if 2012 recruit Amy Neal could set, but I think she's being recruited to take over the Libero position after Palmer leaves.

It'll be interesting to see what Jerritt and Co. do...

Totally forgot about Amy Neal's youtube clip:

Watch out!!

Chloe Collins is the setter for the red team:The Link

Very athletic!

Let's hope that something is in the works to have another setter on the roster for '12.

Looking ahead to next year, this Texas squad is going to be stacked if everyone stays healthy.

Setters: Kocher, Allison
OH: Roberson, Bannister, Bell, Eckerman
RS: McNeal, Webster
MB: Adams, Cameron, Hutson
L: Palmer, Yogi
DS: Arenas, Olschwanger

With all those tall, heavy-hitters, they most likely will be running a 6-2 next year. That means no one under 6'1 will be blocking in the front and serve/receive should be strong with Roberson, McNeal, and Palmer returning.

OHs will be Roberson and one of Bannister/Bell/Eckerman. I think the one who can pass consistently and who hits the best on the left and from behind the 10' line will get the start.

MBs will be Adams and either Cameron/Hutson.

Webster will be back providing a huge block on the right side along with McNeal.

Libero will be an interesting battle between Yogi and Palmer. I'm gonna go with Palmer as she is better on serve/receive and has a better serve.

The good thing about Jerritt is that he has been consistent about putting the best players on the floor regardless of their seniority.

Jerritt said tonight that one of these players is of the caliber of Destiny Hooker. Early signing is next week. Expect a press release for two of the three. The early registrant doesn't sign the classic letter of intent, but rather signs a financial agreement with UT.

Seems like a great 2011 class!

Congrats to Amy Neal and Lake Travis for making it to the State 4A tourney!

And, congrats to Chloe Collins and Cypress-Woods for also claiming their 5A regional title.

For those able to make it to the state tourney in San Marcos later this week, Class 3A Lucas Lovejoy will also be there. 2012 Andie Malloy and 2013 Ebony Nwanebu are other players to watch.

You gotta be excited where this program is headed for the next several years.
Maybe NOW it warrants it's own board..... "On The Court"

The H.S. Girls state tourney semi-finals and finals will be aired live on the Texas Channel (888 on TWC in Austin area). Tourney starts today, and finishes on Friday.

Lake Travis plays today at 5 PM.

Congrats to Amy Neal and Lake Travis; they reach Saturday's championship match by coming back from an 0-2 deficit against Richardson Pearce. TV cameras showed Coach Elliott in the stands.

Chloe Collins and her Cypress Woods staff play friday at 5 PM.

Has anybody looked at the scholarship arithmetic? We're currently at the limit of 12, right? Surely the three 2011 signees will all get 'ships, but we only lose two scholarship seniors. How will that issue be resolved?

i don't know anything about the scholarships but i'm very excited about the talent coming in, and even though we have great recruits signed for the next several years i also think we have a great chance of winning a nc this season. a lot has been said about how wide open the field is this year and the fact 8 or 9 programs have a legitimate opportunity of taking home the title, but i feel really good about our chances, in particular if roberson is back at 100%. florida has been #1 most of the season and this is a squad we took to 5 sets, and totally dominated in the two we won, at a point in the season we weren't playing that well. that was part of a stretch where we lost three in a row and four of five, but we're 16-1 since then and are riding a 13 match win streak. with roberson in the lineup and others playing like they have been lately i think we can beat anyone in the country. i know some feel our chances may not be as good this season because of who we lost last year, and moreso perhaps due to the injuries we're facing, but i believe faucette, roberson, adams, doris, kocher and palmer are as good or better than any starting lineup in the country. and as i said in another post a championship would be the exclamation point on the resurgence of the program...final four followed by championship match followed by an ncaa title. and who knows...based on who we having returning and coming in it could be the start of our very own three-peat!

Great post overseasbbfan1. I also don't know about the scholarships but we currently have 15 players on our team so I think that it has to be more than 12. Might be a good question to ask Jerritt. I think we totally have the potential to reach the final four but I think it depends on 2 things. Who we get in the First Round/Regional with us & whether we come out in the 3rd game strong. We have started slow in the 3rd game all year, especially if we are ahead. Hopefully we can get a BIG crowd for both of these weeks. In the past it hasn't been as big as it should be.

i agree orangeforlife. if we win out we will definitely be at least a #2 seed, but probably not better than that, so assuming we take care of business in the early rounds we'll likely face a #1 seed in the elite 8. but whether we face them then, or in the next round at the final four, we still have to win...and i like our chances against anyone including florida, stanford, cal or hawaii. i also agree that consistency has been an issue at points; of course every team loses sets but there have been times where we've literally anihilated a team in one game and then looked like a different squad altogether the next. you have to love our perserverance and toughness in pulling a lot of those matches out, but we do make it harder on ourselves than it should be sometimes.

I definitely think we will be a #2 seed. No way we would be a #1 & I don't think we would drop to a #3. Especially with the Regional being here. However, if there is a way for the committee to screw it up then I'm sure they can find it.

I agree about our chances against all of those teams but I would prefer not to play Cal until the Final 4. I think they are looking pretty good right now & might have a slight edge over everyone else. Just a slight one. I would LOVE to have a rematch against Florida though. If history repeats itself then we will get either get Hawaii in the first round or Standford in the Regionals & I say bring them on!

if the limit is 12 then you're right, we would be at 13 scholarship players next season with the three recruits coming in. not sure how that would work out but no doubt the coaches have a plan. does anyone know if it's possible for an athlete to receive a non-athletic scholarship based on academic performance (if they qualify), so they would effectively be a walk-on but still be receiving financial assistance? seems like there would be strict rules about that sort of thing but i also think i've heard of that kind of situation occuring elsewhere before. you certainly wouldn't do anything that circumvented any rules, and i can see where this type of a scenario might be abused, but if a student qualifies for certain scholarships based on academic performance, why shouldn't they receive that assistance? perhaps someone with more knowledge of these types of situations can offer more information. i guess the alternative is that someone leaves the squad and if memory serves this same thing happened at one point earlier in elliot's tenure. of course there's always the possibility that someone who doesn't really need the scholarship decides to stay and play regardless; not saying that's likley but you never know.
