J’Covan is history

I wish him the best of luck. He put in his four years, sort of. The eligibility issue in his first year was not entirely his fault. He is one of my all-time favorites. What a gifted player he is. I wish he had made a few memorable game-winning shots, though. Aside from that, he was as good as they come.

That article by Rosner is pretty telling. The information about Avery Bradley from his AAU coach is also very telling. Texas basketball has turned into a "necessary evil" for the one and done players. Avery Bradley never considered himself a Texas Longhorn and just used the program to get to the NBA. He would have never come here if there was not a one year requirement and probably just wanted to pick a school where he could showcase his talent and move on ASAP.

I don't put JCB in this category of "users," and don't mean to hijack the thread. Just thought the article was very informative.

Nobody is a "user" in this context. Its stinking College Sports. These kids have families and 99% of them don't come from money.

If someone was throwing that kind of money at me to leave College early I would have taken that without hesitation. It is an easy decision and people questioning it are stupid. UT isn't going anywhere and Brown isn't going to make any money from his UT degree anyway.

If you are certain to go in the top two rounds, then you go. Simple.

AND..... Staying a year & going from late second round to top half of 1st the following year would be very profitable.

The amount of money Brown can make in the pros is still an issue at this point.

I do know this, an athlete at "The University of Texas" in one of the major sports usually has every opportunity to make the contacts necessary to become successful in life.

JCB is an excellent student and has made his mark in basketball here and if he did come back he could get his degree and then either go the basketball route or most likely a very decent living in the business field.

Horns11, can you please elaborate? As it is, your post is ambiguous in my mind. You doubt JCovan goes 2nd round due to whom else is in the draft, but do you mean JCovan goes undrafted, or will be drafted in 1st round? This years draft doesn't seem exceptional in my view. You do add a decent prospect in Harrison Barnes from UNC who may have gone past season except the lock-out, but otherwise no great superstars on top of the class. You have guys like Tyler Zeller, Anthony Davis, Michael Kidd-Glichrist, maybe an Austin Rivers, a Meyers Leonard But I surely don't see a ton of guards better than JCovan, tweener or not. So retraction or no, I see JCovan leaving. In the end, maybe the UT degree is a meaningful attraction to come back, as is a chance to play in the Sweet Sixteen. But I still see Brown leaving as this year's draft sucks in color as far as I can tell.

I was being favorable towards Brown. He's a mid-to-late first rounder in my opinion. Anyone who throws out the "he won't even get drafted" card must be confusing him with Brandon Mouton.

He's athletic enough to get to the rim, even if he's not that fast. He's a decent shooter. He has the ability to pass the ball, even if his handles aren't that great. He's definitely better than Joseph, who was drafted at the bottom of the first round last year in a stronger draft class.

There was an article in Friday's FW Star Tele that quoted Brown as saying he is still considering his options.....but I have not seen that reference on this board...

The only reason he's still undecided must be the depth of the draft pool this year, which was caused by last year's high uncertainty regarding the NBA lockout. As I recall, many people feared the whole season would be lost.

If he's smart which I believe he is, he'll come back and secure his place among the most popular players in Longhorns basketball history. It could be worth more to him later in life than a year's salary somewhere overseas where he'll spend most of his pro career after a brief stint in the NBA.

He has a child to consider in all of this. If his draft position has maxed out, it might be wise to go now. I know we selfishly think of wanting kids to come back, but this may be the best opportunity for him. I imagine he's close to graduating as well.

I'm tellin ya, he has at least an 80% chance of making much more $$$ in the long run by coming back & becoming nationally famous next year.
Unless his child is starving or needs some type of expensive medical procedure, they would both be better off in the long run if he comes back.
(Just my opinion of course. I don't know J'Covan nor do I know his exact situation)

Just read in the link that said Kabongo is staying that J'cB has not made the decision to leave. this says to me that he is strongly condsidering staying.

My opinion: do whats best for J'CB. If its stay then stay, if its go, then head to the NBA.

On Friday he sais he had been wrapped up with studying & denied that he had even started to make a decision. (
This was after the reports that he was leaving)
He then said he was going home & would discuss it with family over the weekend.
Well, it's Monday, so he prob has a better idea by now.

A friend of a cousin who once knew someone who worked at the Cooley Pavilion told me there was a meeting over the weekend with Barnes, Kabongo and Brown.

Went like this:

Barnes: "Guys, have you been reading what posters on HornFans have been saying? My *** is GRASS if I don't shape up pretty soon and get some players to stay for more than pre-season practice.

Please, oh, PLEASE stay. C'mon, JC, you'll be Naismith and Wooden next year. Myck, you're not going to be an NBA 1st rounder this year --- stay at least one more and you'll go LOTTERY next year......I promise...........Pretty please?"

Kabongo: "Uh, okay coach."

Brown: "Whatever."

That was a quote from JCB himself blont. Friday FWST.
You don't like discussing whether one of the key players will return Major???

It's not that I don't like discussing it, the start was the premise from an article that he was gone already, and the truth is he is not. I didn't like the article and title of the post. I understand where the title of the post came from, it is an article that is BS that I don't like.

It's nearly impossible for me to look down on a kid for leaving early for the money. I took a job as a programmer my sophomore year at UT for twice the money that I hoped to make in ten years. When the opportunity is there you have to do what is best for you and those you support.

I wish J'Covan the best, he was a blast to watch.

If you go to Mark Rosner (reporter for Austin American Statesman) twitter, he tweeted 2 days ago:

"J'Covan Brown's "leaning" toward returning to #Longhorns for senior season, per his father Johnny. I'm starting to think he will return #UT"

He also tweeted yesterday that Jcovan has announced he will make his decision on Tuesday of next week.

Make of that what you will. Hook 'em!

Not only should JB consider his draft chances this year and next, he should consider the less tangible long term benefits of returning and possibly leading "his" team to the final 8 or final 4. By doing that he would endear himself to Texas fans forever and enhance his regional and, possibly, national endorsement value, as well as his post-graduate business and employment prospects in Texas. Sticking around an extra year didn't hurt Ricky Williams, or for that matter, TJ Ford who could have bolted after one year. Those two will reap the returns for their actions for a long time. JB could also, not to mention he'll complete his degree and make mom happy.
