Being a UT/VY fan, I hate to say I agree 100%. That being said, I hope he does bounce back.

good article, and there is certainly some truth to the estimated value of having a strong father figure.

that being said, there are TONS of black athletes (and white ones) who had absentee fathers. think about it. in the NFL and NBA, i would be willing to bet the majority of the players came from one parent households.

sure it matters, but you must overcome that. i did. the strong do.

vince will be fine. i can't imagine how hard it would be to be the best in the world at something (college and HS qb) and then learn you may not have what it takes to play the position in the NFL. i'm sure it is very hard to deal with.

but, he did get a lot of money. i wish all of us that weren't the best at our jobs got millions in signing bonuses. i know this isn't about money, but you still have to consider that when you determine exactly how much you can pity VY at the end of the day.

At this point I care about only one thing regarding VY -

and that is that he lives a happy, healthy, productive life.

If he never plays another down - I am fine with that as long as he is happy being VY.

That was a great article. I think he tackled the core issues affecting VY.

I feel bad for him. The very thing he's dreamed about his entire life is turning into a nightmare.

VY does need to work harder at reading Ds. I agree that the future of the position is in its past, which is to say you must be able to run the O from the pocket to succeed, especially over the long term.

All the crap about father figures and race is irrelevant. McNabb is a good example but not because he is black. Steve Young was also a good example, probably a better example. That's just grandstanding and attaching interpretations that fits axes brought for grinding. Young is not getting booed for being black and he is not struggling because he is black, though the history of assuming that athletic black QBs need not be taught the ropes of running the O from the pocket may have some complicity ranging all the way back to his adolescence.

Young does not read Ds well, if at all. That is a problem, and not everyone, smart or no, has the circuitry to read Ds and react effectively.

I think Whitlock is a compete assclown.

he takes things that have little to do with each other and then twists them all together to try and prove his assertions.

To further my point about Whitlock being an assclown is that I have no idea how he gets to the point that Young not having a father figure in his life is one of the causes of him being a mediocre NFL quarterback and not a leader.

If this is the case wouldn't he have been a poor leader at the high school and college level?

Im willing to bet there a ton of highly succesful pro athletes who were great leaders who grew up in single parent households.

Im willing to bet that there are ton of guys that were piss poor leaders in the NFL that were raised with a strong, stable family enviroment.

Whitlock always twists and turns these asinine theorys so he can get kudos from people because " He saying what no one else in the black community is willing to say"

What a dumbass!!!

Quoting Whitlock:
"You are going to get criticized playing quarterback. If your instinct is to dismiss the criticism as racist, maybe you shouldn't play the position. If you are surrounded by people who spend every waking minute telling you that you can do no wrong and that everyone who criticizes you is a bigot, then maybe you shouldn't play quarterback."

When has VY or his momma said that him being booed is because he's black and everyone else is racist? This guy is assuming Vince thinks that just because some black people think that. Was that paragraph adapted from an article about Obama? It sure sunds like it.

Regarding the "no father" crap. I think the fact that VY is THE man in his family has helped him become a strong leader, not hurt him.

Holy ****, I am truly dumber after having read that article. I can't believe people are saying anything remotely complimentary about it. Vince can't be a good QB because his daddy wasn't around? Give me a ******* break.

I guess that all hardworking success stories in the NFL come from two parent households, right? And all the busts must have come from single parent families. I wonder where Ryan Leaf's daddy was. What about Brian Bosworth?

How about some f'n nfl recievers?

Build'em up and tear'em down. He's still the same guy no matter what the people say.

Vince just needs to be a pro and take what is dealt. He can only change or manipulate what he can control.

Things he can control for the most part:

Get healthy
Have a professional attitude
Stay in the best shape as he possibly can to reduce injuries given his running style of play.
Enjoy the days/weeks/months/years he has left in the game. Time is fleeting, every year of an NFL career is precious so maximize what you can.

Have fun. Don't like to lose but you have to go on if you have a bad possesion, quarter, half, game.

Hook'em Vince.

Whitlock sucks. He thinks he's smarter than other media people but, like others, they all sometimes jump the gun and/or are idiotic (e.g., Reggie Bush will be 1 of the best RBs ever, the 2005 USC team will be 1 of the best ever, VY will be a bust, etc.).

Like most UT & VY fans, we love VY b/c he excelled to the utmost level at UT and took us to the promise land. In my most objective opinion, I think VY has lost his confidence and is overwhelmed by the NFL defenses right now. I know that is an obvious observation. As during school and in life, 1 needs to slow things down to its simplicity when things look bleakest. For example, if you failed your 1st exam in your class, you have to go to class everyday and study more/better. You don't give up and accept failure. You pick yourself up and give your best effort till the end.

I believe in VY and his QBacking skills b/c we all saw what he did at UT against good/great teams (Ohio State, USC, etc.). VY just needs to recover from his injury, and get back to practice. He needs to practice on getting better fundamentally (footwork, timing with the WRs, etc.), but, most importantly, he needs to STOP MAKING BAD PASSES & TURNING THE BALL OVER (such as the INT he threw to the Jacksonville defensive end). VY has to realize that punting is OK most of the time since the Titans have a very good defense. RELY ON YOUR DEFENSE AND BE MORE CAREFUL WITH THE BALL. Vince, we all love you man and believe that you can get this thing turned around and make yourself, your teammates, your family, and all the people who believe in you proud.

I do not care for Jason Whitlock at all but I do agree with one of his comments. Vince does need some friends and family who do not have their heads stuck up his *** while their hand is in his wallet.
I do think he is under a huge amount of pressure from family and friends for financial help. I don't care who you are that has to get to you from time to time.

This worthless article tries to paint VY and Michael Vick with the same brush.

That's completely ******* retarded.

I am not in the least worried about Vince Young's soul or landing himself in prison. VY could go down as the greatest NFL bust ever, but it won't be because he's a sub-human piece of trash who threw it all away. Whatever happens with Vince in the NFL, he will probably still have a good life because he's Vince, and he's a decent, respectful person.

Whitlock has somehow made a correlation between how well you throw an inflated pig bladder and your character. And there is none.

I hated Whitlock back in the Big 8/SWC merging days. I will admit that he's dead on in this article. The other column that he nailed was about the NBA All Star Weekend when it was in Vegas a couple of years ago. He can write the truth when a white journalist can't.
