I have the opportunity to go to Japan w/ some friends in April and Im not sure if its worth it. All in all the trip will cost me prob between $1500 - $2000. Its over 10 days, spending time in Tokyo and Kyoto. We are visiting a friend in the JAG corps so lodging will be free part of the time. Is it worth it to go? Theres def a part of me that has always been curious just because people say its like another planet.

Go, Tokyo is really inexpensive these days. Be careful shopping though, that part is still expensive but hotels are very reasonable and Kyoto is a really nice change from the city, it is what you think of when you think of the old Japan.
The Skiing in Hokiddo is also really good and only about 1 hour train from Tokyo.

If you can make the money work - definitely go. Any chance to travel to another country and experience how other cultures live should be embraced. Broaden your horizons!!

Definitely go. I have always found Asia much more interesting than Europe and you may find the same thing.

If you can swing it financially, go. I spent a week in Tokyo last year. It is an experience that I will never forget.

That's actually a REALLY good price for a trip to Japan. I say take it.

I went for 18 days in October and it was amazing. Stay in Ryokan's and Michiku's and eat local. Both are reasonable and will stretch your dollar. If you are planning on traveling to more that 3 cities, get the Japan Rail Pass inside the US before you leave (you cannot buy one in country); but if you are only going to 2 cities, it's not worth it.

Check with your credit card and debit card companies about exchange rates. Your cards work fine, but the rate are variable with some companies.

Kyoto is the better bet - less expensive, better food and traditional sights. Stay near Gion or near the river.

I've been over there a couple of dozen times on business and love it. The people are incredibly friendly. Japan is a strange combination of very traditional and ultra modern.

April is a great time. You might catch the cherry blossom season. They go wacky over these flowers. There will be "hanami" parties in the major parks where the main objective is to get as drunk as possible sitting under a sakura tree.
