Jamaica Runaway Bay

So the Sister-in-Law to be and her fiance are getting hitched in Jamaica next June. They've reserved a chapel at the Breezes Runaway Bay and are planning on spending a week there with whoever shows up to watch them get married.

My wife is kinda pissed off that we're forced to spend a couple of grand to be a part of the event, but whatever.

My question is what should I expect from the island? Anyone ever been to a Breezes (Superclub?) resort?

Best I can tell this resort isn't near Montego Bay, Negril or Kingston - so what is there to do on the north side of the island? And if I should want to leave the resort are there excursions that I should look into? Are these safe?

I basically need a whole Jamaica primer.

I've never understood the fascination with Jamaica when there are so many other Caribean Islands that are better and, more importantly, safer.

Watch your back and your wallet.

My wife and i have been visiting jamaica since 1979 and will make our 14th trip in early january.
I also have visited most of the carribean and find jamaica to be the most beautiful and wonderful island in the world. i have had more problems in austin with criminal elements (i live near and visit often) than ever in jamaica. do not fear the rasta man. this is what turns most non smoking americans off about jamaica. what they do not understand is that jamaica's repeat business is from people who go there to sample the local produce. do not fear the rasta man. tell him yes..tell him no. be polite. enjoy the lobster, try to find some authentic jerk pork or chicken..enjoy the music and the ocean and the sun and flora and the art . find some 20 yr old jamaican rum. do not hang out in backalleys and do not do anything you would not do in downtown austin or dallas or houston ie, stay out of back alleys. jamaica is wonderful. enjoy.
irie.

There is always someone on these post who has likely never been to Jamaica telling you how "dangerous" it is, etc. BS - It's no different than anywhere else. Go to the Tripadvisor (jamaica) forums. They will be able to answer any questions you have. I've been to Negril 4 times now in the last 2 years - Love it!
