Jeffcoat basically isn't close to making a decision until he makes his visits this summer.
There is also some info on T. Reed and C. Howell in this article. The Link
I don't blame the Jeffcoats for taking time to pick out the right school, and from the list, it appears the young man could do fine without football. The lack of media whoring is appreciated.
On the other hand, those who are critical of the early recruiting process because it may cost us a shot at a guy who is taking his time are, imho, way off base. We may miss on a stud who wasn't sure where he wanted to go, but I like that we recruit kids who want to be Longhorns. Not to sound aggy, but there is a lot to be said for passion and pride. If Mr. Jeffcoat decides to join us, then he will agree. I don't blame him for checking out his options, and i don't blame him for going somewhere else, if that happens. His loss.
Well said, 1leg. Those of us looking for updates and getting frustrated because a high school kid and a family want to take their time over what really is a very important choice -- and one that is worth a significant amount of money, a four-year education and whatever comes after it -- need to sit back and breathe through our eyelids. Best of luck on your choice to Jackson, to Lache, to Darius, to Corey, to Trovon, to Jordan and everybody else in the mix. And if you happen to make the right one and come on down to the 40, hey, all the better.
Agree with 1legged-- except for the "His loss" remark. Good family, smart and talented young man. They will be just fine wherever he decides to go to school.
I'm not worried. If we get him, we snag a great kid and a great player. If he doesn't want to come here, we'll snag a different great kid and player. Who know what fall will bring. We may be very glad to have a scholarship or three still open.
Personally, I think the filling up the slots helps us long-term. I don't think that it is a coincidence that each year the coaches are now filling up the slots with higher ranked players. In any given year, you are going to miss out on a stud or two (although there is no way to know for sure who would have eventually committed). However, it creates a sense of "something special" and a serious sense of urgency when slots get filled up early. A Ferrari is considered elite because it is rare and expensive. It costs more to produce, but not $180,000 more.
Filling up the slots also puts those potential "swollen egos" back in perspective before they can get out of hand. It keeps the process about the program as a whole and not about the recruit, no matter how good he is (in theory). "You're not sure you want to be a Longhorn? No problem. We've got 200 other guys who do."
Of course you can't ever say that, but that is the truth of the matter when you've got twenty guys committing in the spring. A couple of years of that, and every high school freshman football player already knows he better practice hard, play well and commit early if he wants to be a Longhorn.
It's truly amazing, the amount of talent on the defensive side of the ball with both last year's signing class and the one that will be signed in 2010. I've been watching the Horns closely for decades and I can't remember two classes, back to back, better than these.
Jeffcoat would be the cherry on top of one giant recruiting ice-cream sundae.
I just hope he's as excited about playing with these other guys as I am about the possibility of him playing with them!
Hippie, there are no indications from him about what he really wants to do. Some were saying for a while that he wants to come to UT really badly, but that his dad is steering him elsewhere. (I dont know if there is any truth to that.)
