As constructed with Billups, the Pistons were probably not going to get pass the Celtics. With Iverson, I think it is almost a guarantee that they are a lesser team. However......

This is potentially a good move (Iverson's expiring contract of $20.8 mil + Rasheed Wallace's expiring contract of $13 mil) for the Piston if they and their fans are willing to wait until the 2010 free agent signing period. These players can opt out: LeBron, Dwayne, Amare, Bosh, Tyson Chandler, Dirk Notwitzki, Josh Howard, Michael Redd. The unrestricted free agents for 2010 include Joe Johnson and Jermaine O'Neal.

Patience is necessary because the 2009 free agent class is not nearly as good as the 2010 class: Kobe (early termination option), Boozer (player option), Shawn Marion, Mehmet Okur, Ron Artest (yea right to the Pistons), Lamar Odom, Hedo Turkoglu (early termination option).

I could see them going after Boozer (who will probably want and get a max contract). If they strike out on Boozer, they should wait until 2010 and see what $33 mil gets you in free agency (assuming the salary cap doesn't go up by then).

Also, the Pistons should be in a good position to be players in trade offers in 2009 from teams who fear losing their star to free agency in 2010.
