I've spent all of my 44 years in Cali

and tomorrow, for the first time, I head to Big Sur.

I'm really excited about this. Taking the mountain bike, and looking forward to some beautiful sights.

Just stay the hell outta Malibu.

Be careful hiking there. I not so fondly remember huge fields of poison oak.

Also, about 15 years ago, I went there with a liberal girl who had heard a song called, I think, Little Cup of Kindness" (I think she knew it from the Kerville Folk Festival). Anyway, it was written about some guy in Big Sur and somehow, we met the guy. He takes us to his commune which had amazing views of the ocean. He had multiple little huts/cottages that were dirty with old, dirty, smelly mattresses on the floor and stuff (like empty coffee cans, shaving cream and rat droppings) littered throughout. Goats had been in most of the huts. There were zen signs everywhere, and a few kids with distended bellies. Well, he offered to put us up for the night. Then we had to figure out a way to sneak out. Camping was a much better option.

Well, good luck.

Well he is in SoCal so it is a long drive. I was in the Bay Area which is much closer. Now if he hasn't been to Santa Barbara or Yosemite...

The Alamo is not that great any longer now that they charge regular theater prices. A regular movie theater....wait...I don't remember

Drive? Eight effin hours each way, with the holiday traffic of course.

Beauty? Wow. Majestic Redwoods and the fabulous Pacific Ocean. What a great trip.

Going up, I took Highway 101 all the way to Morro Bay, where I picked up 1. On the way back, I continued up 1 through Carmel to Monterey, and then over to Salinas and back down 101.

Absolutely stunning.

Oh...and I've been to the Alamo. Twice.

Glad you had fun. I've been debating moving back to California to Carmel or further north towards Capitola/Santa Cruz. I guess even further south to Santa Barbara is an option. Prices have come down a lot. However, we then compared those places to Austin and Tucson. Wasn't so favorable after that. Tough choices. They all have their pluses and minuses.

there was a time (when I was doing development financing) that I thought Santa Barbara had the stupidest pricing in the country.

It's better now.

Santa Barbara is pretty much heaven on Earth.

If I had to live in the States and could afford it, I think that Santa Barbara (plus or minus about 10 miles would be where I'd choose.

#2 on the list would be near La Jolla. (Or one of the pocket towns just south of it.) I've barely been there for part of a day, but you could tell that it wasn't quite real it was so amazing. Kind of like out of a movie.

But I'd want to live close enough to the water that I could either carry my surfboard from my house/apt or at least that I could put it on the board rack on the side of my beach cruiser bicycle.
