I have all of my music on my laptop and listen to it primarily at work in the background. I have all of the music saved to a folder on my desktop. I changed the folder after I had learned I'd been saving all of my stuff to the network at the office. Now I cannot open iTunes when I'm away from work and home or on the road. If and when I connect to the network via VPN remotely, I can access the songs.

What's going on? All of my music is saved to the desktop, not the network...

The files in your Itunes still probably point to the network. You can't just move the songs and have Itunes work. I would probably suggest reinstalling Itunes and setting it up again and having it pull the songs itself directly from your computer.
