It's time for a change in terminology...

,,, and we need to distinguish a long-running series of games (Texas/aggy; Texas/TCU; Texas/Baylor; Texas/Tech) from a long-running rivalry (Texas/OU).

We all know that Texas/aggy was a rivalry only in their minds - it was just a series to us. The quicker we adapt our speech and writings to the distinction, the quicker aggy fades into oblivion.

I agree with Stat. The hatred is there. It is a rivalry, even if it isn't our number one.

They will always be number two to us.

Aggy will always be our rival, that isnt going to change just because they got their panties in wad and ran off to play in another neighborhood. Little brother is still little brother.

I think Aggie became bigger after Arkansas left. They are also the only Texas team that has had any string of luck against us. Baylor, Tech, UH, Rice, SMU and TCU are or were all rivalries but AM stood out amongst them.

It is far and away OU, Arkansas was a distant second and AM was 3rd behind Arky.

There are many elements that make up a "rivalry," but the ones that are important IMO are: competitiveness, frequency played, and proximity. Using those criteria there are only 8 real candidates for UT's rivals, as there are only 8 teams Texas has played 30+ times in our history. All 8 are either in Texas or a bordering state, so they all meet the frequency requirement. To rank them by competitiveness, based on UT's winning %, it would look like this:

1. OU (.557)
2. TAMU (.641)
3. SMU (.644)
4. Arkansas (.727)
5. Baylor (.730)
6. TCU (.744)
7. Tech (.750)
8. Rice (.763)

Notwithstanding the surprise of seeing SMU above Arky, IMO, we have 3 historical rivals: OU, A&M, and Arkansas, in that order. The status of Arkansas as a rival has slipped if not disappeared altogether, and the same may very well happen with the Ags in the coming years, leaving us with one rival (OU) and a collection of weak in-conference quasi-rivals (Baylor, TCU, and Tech).

You don't play someone for a hundred years without them being something of a rival. The game with the agricultural college was a rivalry for UT, but no better than the number three rivalry disguised as number two after the swine left for the SEC. No matter how much the toy soldiers huffed and puffed, goose-stepped, and spoke in tongues, UT was never going to take the game as seriously as agricultural did, and that's what whizzed the cult off so much. They hated us 'cause they ain't us, and that's not gonna change when they get to their new home next year. I'm sure the rest of the SEC will be amused while they have their way with fake army.

When I think of agricultural in the SEC, I think of Deliverance...except, unlike Ned Beatty, aggy will like what's happening to 'em.

Even though I didn't follow Texas football until 1995, Arkansas does feel like a rival to me, although not on OU's level nor A&M's. But I also probably pay attention to UT football history a lot more than most fans my age.
