From the article above:

[T]he Wisconsin native turned down the opportunity to be the head coach at UCLA, Southern California, North Carolina State, Maryland, Marquette, Illinois and Wake Forest.

"Texas was different," one source told CBSSports.com. "Shaka wanted this one."

The chance to coach at a football school with unlimited resources in a Power-5 conference was simply too much for Smart to turn down, sources said.

Let's see a Strong and Smart effort to put football and basketball back in the top 25!

I am pleased for sure. Would have been with either of the top two names floated around. I hope for big things, even bigger than what Rick accomplished. Rick paved the road and now Smart can speed on it.

Now what happens to Lanier and Wright?

We need Lanier's recruiting skills and Wright has also been very good as the strength and conditioning coordinator at Texas. It's been reported that Barnes is holding a spot for Wright at Tennessee. But Wright has strong ties to Texas and to Austin, including his business Train for the Game. Not sure if he owns the franchise in Austin?

And Boom - just reported that Shaka has made his 1st offer at the Texas head coach - A '16 recruit. Already working on the players who will fit Longhorn Havoc Basketball.

The Longhorn coaches are now both SMART and STRONG ............

Shaka,,,, welcome to the future Big 12 Conference champions.

It doesn't hurt that during SXSW many of the most watched national entertainment shows broadcast from Austin singing it's praises about how much they love the city. Aside from sports, Austin is the hip place to be for countless music, movie and tv stars. They don't just brag on the festival, they brag on the city as a whole. When these coaches have a traditional sports program like Texas dangling big dollars and offering for them to live in the national hot spot city...it's hard to say no. Texas is a dream job for most because of the rich history of the sports, and also the lure of the nationally revered living environment.
